poor man's lo-jack?
hey guys, i already ran this past ricey so it's cool to post in here. i want your guys opinion on this. i already have security features on my car so this is just an idea.
ok, you know how on a cell phone there is a location option, where your carrier or 911 would be able to locate you? let's say that you left your cell phone in the car and the car was stolen. is it possible for 911 or the carrier to locate the phone, thus locating your car?
here's what ricey had to say:
Ricey McRicerton (8:53 AM 9/25/2004): Hmm, an interesting question to say the least. I really can't tell you wether it would work or not. I know my phone has a GPS tracker in it, but going through 911 wouldn't be your best bet IMHO. I don't think they would want the resources for that service tied up trying to track down a Civic. Also I'm not sure if the GPS tracker would work if the phone isnt on. Throw it up in EG+ though and see how it's recieved. I don't know enough about it to really advise you one way or the other.
ricey has a point about 911 using the feature, but what about the carrier? and to go back to my original question, is it even possible? thanks in advance for everyone who replys, peace.

Well, that's nice and all but when you can get a GPS alarm system that you can acually watch your car move around from you car for under 500 bucks, I don't think that it's worth it. If you want more info on my GPS service contact me mongoliandonuts@yahoo.com or PM me
why would you want to leave your phone in the car all the time anyway? isnt a phone for making and receiving calls while youre out
edit-besides the thief would probly find the phone and turn it off or get rid of it

I remember hearing about someone who did that once. The only thing is you have to call the local police station instead of 911 and usually they are not open 24/7...which poses a problem since most cars get stolen in the mid night time.

Im pretty sure that GPS function in the phone is only active when the phone is connected to the 911 system, so in simple terms unless the car theif calls 911 I dont think theres really any way they can trace it. How much does lo-jack really cost?

Is there a monthly fee also or is it a one time expense?

These newer phones always know where they are as long as they're on. To verify - look at the time as you slide into a new timezone. May take a little while - but the time will change over. Keep in mind that it wouldn't change over unless it knew where it was. Could just invest in a POS phone from your service provider and still get located. Hell, my 5 year old Sprint flip still switches time just liek the new stuff. I'm not sure, but I believe it's standard issue on all these phones that have any kind of access to a network that resembles the internet (the phones where you don't program the time into them). Just get some industrial strength velcro from RadioShack (the thick plastic white one) and smack it on the inside of your rear bumper when you're going somewhere suspect. Even if the whole car is in pieces when the find it - no one would ever look at the rear bumper....unless they read this post
As for getting someone who can do something about it to actually give a crap? That's the question. Cops could probably take care of that.
On a seperate note, if you live somewhere where cops aren't available 24hrs - good chance you own an El Camino and your name is probably Cletus.

i work for cingular, you can do this, but its a pain in the ***. We do it sometimes when phones get stolen. Make sure its a gsm phone, and yes the phone must be on, 911 can not trace the call. In the philly region on the news there was a girl who called 911 saying her mom was not breathing, the phone died and they still havnt been able to find her. (which makes no sense cause they still have the phone number, which can easily be tracked down to its user). But anyway, with us only the GSM phones have that capability. GSM phones have sim cards in them. CDMA or TDMA phones do not. Verizon and sprint I believe are not on GSM. I'm not sure if they can be pinpointed with them. But the thing is you need to have your phone activated, so thats a nice monthly fee to track your car in the event its stolen.
I've thought about this before....my phone is GPS enabled (nextel i730) and you don't have to call 911 for it to engauge...I know my phone has the gps going every so often cause if I click on it it tells me my location (like 71 degrees this and blank degress that...you know) and it updates every few hours..i'm sure there is a way for nextel to track my **** if they wanted...
