auto to manual?
I have a 97 LS automatic . I really want to make it a manual instead.
How much of a pain is it to do the conversion?
Any suggestions on what tranny to get?

its been done..and its actually really easy...not exactly cost-effective though...
if you got the parts and the tools, do it up..but if your gonna pay someone to do it, spend the money on a turbo kit..you'll save

haha... damn, it's going to be a lot of work. You may be better off, selling your auto one and buy a 5 speed.
basic rundown of the parts you need.
Manual Tranny (obviously)
Manual ECU
Shift Linkage and shifter
Manual Pedals
Clutch Master cylinder/Booster/slave cylinder
Clutch lines
Flywheel(not sure) and Clutch of course.
Misc support brackets and stuff.
if you can get all those parts cheap and know how to do it yourself by all means Do it. If not you may want to consider selling and buying a 5 speed Teg.

I have done it 5 times and it isnt lots of fun but the results are worth it. There are lots of things to buy and you should just ger performance things at the same time i.e. flywheel, clutch, short shifter... You also need to do some wiring just to get the thing to work, if you want i will go more in depth. You also need a new ecu. As for transmission it depends on what you have planned for the car... if you want to go turbo you should get an LS tranny. If you are planning to go all motor or you just want to gain some acceleration you should get a gsr, type r, or a 2nd gen b16 tranny. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions or you want me to get more in depth then just e mail me Andrew_Burchett@mail.msj.edu
