Speaker sizes
Could someone let me know the rear deck OEM speaker size on the 1991 Accords? My wife's is a DX if it matters. It actually does not have speakers in the rear but I am getting her new speakers (front and rear) and a CD AM/FM head as a surprise.
The OEM is just awful. But that's what you get with the base model, I guess. Thanks in advance.

I have a 96 EX and it is still horrible. It is actually not that bad for a stock system but it wasn't good enough for me and I noticed a huge difference in sound quality when I upgraded. I don't know the speakers sizes but if you go to http://www.crutchfield.com it will tell you what size speakers you have in there. In my EX it was 6.5's in the front and 6X9's in the rear.

Just enter the information into Crutchfield, it'll tell you what fits the car. To answer your question, the rear deck speakers of a '91 Honda Accord DX sedan are 6.5" rounds.

Yup. Crutchfield helped immensely.
Next, has anyone added speakers to the back when OEM was not originally there? I would assume that the rear deck has a spot for them; I'll just have to make a hole in the carpet? Is this a correct assumption? Thanks.

When I put in rear speakers in my '88 Corsica (now dead, RIP), I didn't cut a whole in the carpet. The paperboard or whatever was back there had a bunch of holes with the carpet above it.
I could have, and I had the grills for it, I just didn't want to mess with it and what I put in sounded much, much better than the factory speakers.
And you'll have to run the wires up to the head unit, but that shouldn't be a problem.
By the way, if you haven't bought the AM/FM CD player yet, take a look at the Alpines at Crutchfield. You can get a nice CD player for under $200 now, add about $30 if you want to play MP3s. Or, if you want to save a little money, take a look for the Alpine CDA 7839 on ebay, I've had this since 2000 and it is a great little radio, it sells for ~ $80 to $90 shipped. If you are looking at the CDA 7839, make sure the auction comes with a mounting bracket as well as the trim ring for the faceplate.
