Hi all - new here again although I was active several years ago.
Thought I'd share my build (I done so back in 2015/2016 but one thing led to another and the build is only completing now). It's a 2.1L B series in a world of k-swaps!
The brief setup is as follows: - Darton MID sleeved B18 bored to 85mm and o-ringed (all machine work done by Mazworx) - Moroso 5.5qt oil pan and 4Piston ported oil pump - 92mm stroker kit (BC crank, Manley H-beams and custom Traum pistons around 13.0:1 - 4Piston GSR V2 (I bought the V1 when I started this build but sold that and purchased the V2 recently....V1 pictured below) - Full Ferrea Valvetrain - Skunk2 pro 3 cams - Intake will be a 3.5 inch CAI with a Boost Logic stainless steel filter and a Vibrant v stack....I will run a direct air feed to the filter also - K-Tuned 80mm TB and Skunk2 Ultra Race ported by 4Piston + 1L spacer - ASP header to mate to Speedfactory 3 inch piping and a K-Tuned turndown muffler (I ran a Blox mini race backbox initially but it was WAYYYY too loud) - E85 flex fuel setup - Walbro 450 pump / Weldon A2040 FPR / Speedfactory fuel rail / ID 1050x / PTFE fuel lines - K series coil conversion - Crank and cam trigger kit - Meziere electric water pump - Speedfactory oil catch can setup - ATI damper - 98spec DC2 S80 with 4.4 final drive (may be swapped for 4.7 at later stage) - Likely to be running on a Link G4X
The original plan was to install the engine into my EG hatch:
However, after the build getting delayed for so long and with the car being left outside exposed to the elements for so many years, the shell gave into the weather and isn't really roadworthy anymore.
So I am now doing something that I originally bought the EG to avoid...and that is to install the engine into my EK9 Type R:
The EK9 already has MeisterR SuperRace coilovers, Innovative 75A mounts, 16 inch Regamasters and I have a FullRace traction bar waiting to be installed.
Some parts and engine pics:
As it stands, the engine is 95% together. I have to buy the fuelling components and a few other things, and the builder/tuner (ap-performance here in Ireland) sorts the ECU and the trigger kit and coil conversion.
Hopefully I will have some updates soon...now to get the EK9 out of storage and put it back on the road

Looks like a really nice setup, and glad to see its a true 2.1 with the 92mm crank. I had an 85x92 build in 2006 and have debated doing an updated one for my current car so I am definitely curious to see how this turns out, should be a pretty stout setup!
I havent heard an feedback from people using the 4p stroker kit and finding info on the BC kit is basically non existent. Was there any specific reasons why you went with the 4p kit vs BC or just convenient since you had them do the head as well? What was the reason for the piston swap? Did the machine shop give any feedback on the finish/how much work was needed on the pieces before assembly? Thanks

Hey - yeah I definitely wanted to add a bit of displacement to the b series so went with the 92mm crank. If I were to do it all again I'd prob go with a DART tall block and 95mm...but hindsight is always perfect! Your 2.1L back in 2006 must have broken a lot of hearts...
So in choosing the 4P stroker kit....the fact I was ordering a bunch of other parts from 4P shipped to Ireland was in my decision. But also the fact the kit used the BC crank which I read nothing but good things about and being able to drop it in and use without really any modifications was great. Manley H beams and Wiseco pistons are tried and tested so I felt the kit answered anything I asked of it. I did purchase the kit in 2015...so nowadays I think BC offer a slightly lighter crank, I believe there are lighter steel rods now available... as is the way with R&D over the years. The pistons were swapped because the engine builder experienced clearance issues with the wiseco pistons. Pro3 cams seem to be somewhat notorious for P2V clearance and also V2V clearance when running oversized valves (I am running stock size) from what i have read since then. There were a few different ways we could have fixed the clearance issue down to something as simple as a thicker head gasket, but the builder/tuner recommended we not sacrifice any compression etc and get a set of custom pistons made. No real chat about assembly ease/difficulty bar the P2V clearances...communication was pretty mute recently and only getting back on top of things now but I'll keep you updated when I have a proper chat with him
More parts rolling in. I've got almost everything I need on my side now. I know AP Performance has the ECU and a few sensors got already too. Booked in for the very start of June. Lets see how close to 300hp I can make in an N/A B series!
I will be getting friends to mock up the exhaust for me and get it setup with v-bands. I also have to try get a 3.5 inch intake arm made up (they're difficult to find off the shelf for the B series) and get the air feed from the front bumper setup. I want to try build a lexan airbox around the filter so I hope make a mess of it!
Speedfactory 3 inch exhaust piping (It will be a sad day when my J's Racing exhausts come off....)
Vibrant 9 inch race muffler
Moroso road race/street sump
Speedfactory titanium sump bolts
Speedfactory billet mounting bracket for my Weldon fuel pressure regulator
Walbro 450 pump and install kit
ID 1050x injectors
Speedfactory fuel rail
ATI damper (the street version to allow me to use power steering for the moment for the annual NCT/MOT test). I plan on switching to an electric power steering setup in the future
Speedfactory titanium intake manifold and exhaust manifold stud kits

I'm actually building the same motor for the same road race/time attack. I just had a block Ramey sleeved. I'm thinking about going with the BC LW stoker kit, shaves 100 grams per rod which seems like a big gain. I'm curious why you chose the heavier 4piston setup? Also any updates? I'm assuming you've got it tuned by now from your photos the motor was already done. I've also got a ported head with an smsp style header which is crazy. Pretty much the same build but I swapped out my ultra race for an ultra street and had it ported and a 76mm TB instead of the 90mm from my last motor. I'm curious to see what power you made.

Hey - I'm actually dropping the car to the builder/tuner tomorrow so it will hopefully be running base tune at least within 2 or 3 weeks. Regarding the stroker kit, I bought the kit of 4P in 2015 (yes that long ago!) and back then the lighter crank was either not available or I was simply unaware of it tbh. I was getting so many parts from 4P I didn't venture too far from their website when looking at the kits and cranks and just bundled everything together for one shipment since I'm in Ireland. I'd have definitely gone for the lighter weight version now if I were spec'ing it now. In hindsight I'd have just bought a full long block from 4P or Ramey Racing etc to make things a bit easier.
Good to hear of someone else putting a good all motor B together...few and far between these days ha any idea when yours will be up and running?
I'm actually waiting for Ramey Racing to send my block back from being sleeved. I'm hoping to crack 250whp on e85. Once I've got the block then it's go time. I make 225/162 on our Dyno here from a 11:5:1 compression b20vtec with a built head and cams. Hoping if I go to 13:1 and a little larger displacement I can crack the 250whp mark.

Ahhh you're running the same compression as me also...very very similar! I stuck with the Ultra race intake mani and 80mm throttle body because it's more for the street or drag racing but if my midrange does suffer too much I'll prob go to the Ultra Street with a spacer and smaller throttle body too

Any updates on the build? It's hard to find any info on the stoker kits.

Hey sorry for lack of updates. The EK9 is with AP-Performance atm and the new engine is ready to drop in. Illness and holidays has delayed things a little but I've been told the engine is going in next week. I'm going to get AP to run a base map on our pump 95 initially to iron out any possible issues that arise. Then I'll be getting a 3.5 inch intake, air feed and air box made. I'll be getting the header ceramic coated and I'm thinking of getting an intake manifold heat blanket made by a company in the UK called Funk Motorsport since it sits in one of the hottest parts of the bay...there may be some benefit to trying to keep it cool. I'm going to get a bigger muffler also because the car is louder than you can even imagine (and this is coming from me that has ran a J's Racing 60RR for the last 10 years). When I have those few things done I'll be back to AP for the final map on the E85 flex fuel....most likely going to run VP C85

Wow okay. Yeah I run a 3 inch dumped right out the passenger side. We don't have a DB rule where I run on the race tracks, it's pretty dang loud. I'll be on pump e85 c85 is so expensive lol

Ahhh haha I can only imagine what that sounds like in the cabin. C85 is expensive but since I'll only really be running it to race which wont be all the time I don't mind trying to get the few extra bhp out of it. I'll defo keep you updated when it even gets base tuned

@TRACKboii any progress with your build? I'm still waiting atm. Getting the last few things and engine break in oils etc. together and when the engine builder/tuner is back from holidays on the 12th I hope I will see it on a base map soon

I have eventing picked out, all the parts are sitting here but I'm waiting for some custom JE pistons with lighter wrist pins. I'm pretty dad over budget at this point so I don't mind the wait. A few other things are taking longer to gather then I had originally wanted. Most likely this will be a winter build. I'm going with 84.5 X 89mm crank (LS) after talking to 4Piston and also BC the stroker kits really only add 5hp per 3mm larger stoker then 89mm. They both said the 92mm option no one runs because of low gains. The 95 is more suitable but also harder on the motor. The other thing in question was the BC rods. Although my tuner hates BC stuff (says it's just China wholesale) I asked around and it seemed 50/50 with the quality of BC rods. For these reasons I swapped some stuff out and I'm going 84.5 X89mm, Manley rods, JE pistons (13:1) with RM 24xxx cams, bad guys ported and built stage 5 GSR head and matching ported skunk2 ultra street intake..this combo has made 260-270 so it's been done. It sounded like it was safer to push higher quality parts then mildly push cheaper parts. It will be a learning curve I've got several blocks here so maybe a stroker kit in the future we will see.

Thanks for the detailed update. Very similar to mine...over budget and taking longer than expected haha interesting to hear the info about the 92mm crank. TBH I was expecting minimal gains but while I was spending so much money on the block I decided to get the crank while I was at it but I was also too afraid to run a 95mm on a 'street' car (bare in mind I bought all this in 2015 when prices were far more reasonable than today). I am aiming to get as close as possible to 300bhp (I think about 265-270whp) so every hp I can gain is important haha Did you see 4Piston's instagram posts where they are almost ready to release their own b series 'race core' cylinder head? 318cfm before porting! You've a very similar setup to mine with the manley rods and compression but different cams and bolt ons...will be interesting to see what we make. It will probably be the winter by the time I get mine back on a base map, new intake, fuel lines, exhaust muffler etc and get back for the final tune. Good luck with the build
Hey all - finally collected the EK9 last Saturday and brought it home. It is just on a base map as expected...literally ran in on the dyno in the afternoon and I collected it that evening before travelling for a month so i managed to get it home and back into my car bubble before travelling. All I know about power is that it made 158lbft at the 5k rpm limit as it stands ha It has a 5k rpm limit for now, and is being restricted by the intake. Also the compression is quite high for our 95 pump fuel in Ireland as expected so it is turned back a bit and is mapped very safely for now. Will ramp up a few miles and get it back to AP Performance to set up the ethanol flex fuel system and get it fully tuned. Already however the low down power from the 2.1L is night and day difference vs the little B16B. The big K-Tuned throttle body and Ultra Race makes it quite aggressive low down even though the power band isn't going to shine until probably 6.5k or 7k rpm...it just wants to go go go ha
The items I need to address now before the final tune is:
- 3.5 inch intake arm to connect to the v stack and filter I have already...plus a big cold air feed from the front bumper
- An oil catch can to be made in a closed loop system (needs to be closed loop to pass the road safety tests here)
- A Vibrant flat black muffler (the system on it is the loudest thing I've ever heard....my mum heard me drive through my local village about 4 kilometres away with all windows and doors shut!)
- PTFE lines made to allow me to run ethanol...probably VP C85
- Also new tires since the car is already spinning second in the dry...something I never had to worry about with my B16 haha
- Also powder coat anything in the bay black to match the valve cover
Engine bay isn't the neatest. The additions could have been located in more discreet locations etc but I wanted it more for functionality, avoid drilling the firewall and easily accessible for maintenance.

A few more pieces coming through the door...getting ever closer to going back to AP Performance for the final tune. In the last few days I've received A SpeedFactory catch can with associated AN fittings and hose, block breather fittings from Exoracing in the UK, a battery relocation kit from Tegiwa in the UK (I have an Odyssey PC680 battery on the way), and a K-Tuned turndown to try quieten it down a little to avoid getting arrested when I take it out of the garage!
I got my K-Tuned rear box installed last week and I couldn't be happier. The car is still loud and definitely louder than my old B16B with a J's Racing 60RR, but for a fully built high comp 2.1L it is far more manageable to pop into the local town without getting arrested! The welds are the best I have seen and it managed to give the car a really nice deep tone with no rasp...I would definitely recommend.
I have noticed a spot of rust coming through on one of the seams in the engine bay unfortunately which is going to take priority over getting the car fully tuned so another delay added into the mix...but so far I've done a few hundred kilometres without any issue or hiccup to note which I am very happy with given everything except the radiator and power steering has been changed or modified. I had a long wait with AP Performance but he delivered very good work as always
Annoyingly a powerwash took some paint off the corners of my rear number plate recess also...I got it from a friend years ago and his Y56 is peaking through!

Slow progress...a few hiccups to sort out which was expected considering the extent of modifications, biggest being a bit of timing belt walk. I was trying to keep power steering but will ditch it so I can instal a K-Tuned timing belt tensioner which AP Performance has and was planning to use on my engine originally. A good friend is helping me out with a few things to speed up the process and he was the one to spot a couple of things that needs a little bit of investigation. Catch can is basically plumbed up, power steering ditched and battery relocated to the boot thanks to a Tegiwa relocation kit. AP Performance had one ventilation port on the head but we decided to get the second drilled and welded to have it in place and not have to do it in the future. Some pics from 2 nights ago of the new Speedfactory catch can installed...will tidy up the little bit of valve cover with some gloss black soon.
Will try get the fuel lines sorted asap and then just a 3.5 inch intake to get fabbed before booking back in for mapping
Slowly making progress and a huge thanks to a friend of mine that is really pulling out all the stops to get the EK9 ready for final mapping. A few delays along the way waiting for parts and also while the car is off the road we are bringing forward some future plans to now. The current plans and work are:
- Battery has been relocated to the rear to make way for the Speedfactory catchcan
- Power steering has been removed to run a timing belt tensioner to be installed later
- ABS is getting removed with a kit from ProLineBraidedLines in the UK...very nice kit
- PTFE lines and fittings in the bay and an 8AN feed/6AN return PTFE kit from Valex Racing...again a very nice kit
- Full Race traction bar getting installed
- Intake is in the works...my friend is piecing this together. He is moving the radiator over slightly with the BullBoost mounting kit to mount on the traction bar. This to run a big velocity stack from ProperFabrication and air feed to an air box he is going to make up. Some nice 3d printed pieces going into this. Sprayed the v. stack black to reduce the attention from the notorious Irish cops ha!
- Going to bite the bullet and get an aluminium radiator and slim fan
- I've always had trouble with the OEM electric window regulators so I have a set of manual regs and I have ordered a set of door cards from TrackCarDoorCards in the UK
Finally some progress after all this time. A family and house renovations tend to put the poor cars on hold! It is back with AP Performance at the moment getting a few things inspected and to tune the car. I will only run it on our pump fuel for now (equivalent to 91 in the US) with some NF octane booster to help out. A few things were upgraded while it was off the road:
- Speedfactory oil catch can installed. Odyssey PC680 battery relocated to the boot
- Power Steering removed and the rack has been looped
- ABS removed and new brake lines and clutch line from Proline Braided Lines in the UK
- New intake, air feed and heat shield....tricky to install such a large air feed on a prefacelift! Proper Fabrications v stack in bumper. Custom feed and mounts, Boost Logic stainless filter, Vibrant v stack, 3.5 inch intake pipe
- Aluminium rad and slim fan from A4H in the Netherlands mounted on a Full Race traction bar
- PTFE lines throughout (8AN feed and 6AN return) and fuelling components in the bay relocated
Now to see what power it makes on the NF octane booster and get her home for a good wash! A huge thanks to a good friend of mine who carried out pretty much all of this while the car was sat in his shed.
Ignore the broken bottom on the drivers seat....I hit a hump and went through but it will be mended when I get the car back!
I'll hopefully have some final numbers in the coming days. Aonghus @ AP Performance had it on the dyno for just an hour last week but it is louder than I was expecting and, long story short, he had to call it quits on the dyno prematurely! It is sitting at 280hp @ 9k rpm atm but he said there is probably a little more in it. I'm happy to hear this as I was hoping for 280hp+ on just octane booster. I'm unaware of a higher hp road legal N/A B Series in Ireland if mine does settle north of 280bhp...the highest hp setup I know of is a 2.2L pushing 280bhp I believe...so hopefully Aonghus does manage to squeeze a little more from it!
