That was unexpected. Will be interesting to see what impact it has.
The track previously featured a single DRS detection zone, 13 metres before Turn 14, three corners from the end of the lap. This triggered DRS activation points at the exit of Turn 16 onto the pit straight, and again at the exit of Turn 2. A second detection point has now been added on the fast left hand sweep that follows Turn 10, some 170 metres before Turn 11.
This triggers a new activation point 104 metres after Turn 12, potentially allowing drivers to drag past rivals on the run through the unnumbered right hand kink that leads into the tight right at Turn 13.
However the main reason for this extra zone is not so much to aid passing at Turn 13 but to help drivers to get closer to the car ahead heading to the original DRS detection point that follows before Turn 14, thus encouraging more use of the activation points that follow.

yeah T13 isn't much of an overtaking spot: relatively narrow track funneling into a blind medium-speed corner. i bet it might spice things up as people try silly stuff and end up in the gravel
cars are even more aero sensitive this year? okay give em even more flappy wings!
soon all straights will use DRS and we'll be half way to active aerodynamics

I was watching the 99 season recently (first season of the grooved slicks #oxymoron), and even then Alan Jones was saying (paraphrasing) "the cars are too aero sensitive right now, remove downforce and add mechanical grip with wider, full slicks".
Almost 20 years on, and we're still going the wrong way.

hey we got full slicks at least?
did u see scarb's 2018 merc F1 drawing with no aero bits? just wings and body and no aerofoils/bargeboards/wings everywhere? beautiful

I think the biggest thing with the 3rd zone is allowing the cars to stay closer through the end of the lap, when aero is less of a concern.
Formula 1 has delayed the rollout of its F1 TV OTT streaming service, with no official date in place for when the system will be fully operational.
Regarding the halo thing, it seems like it will add a lot of safety. Not sure why anyone would be against that. Car racing is a dangerous sport. Not wanting to be safer because something doesn't look cool or just not wanting to change for the sake of it is beyond stupid.
i wanted them to do internal beta during the first preseason test
external stress testing with a free public beta during the second test
so it wouldn't suck out loud come melbourne
i'm still trying to work out what happened. it sounds like they invested in a bunch of infrastructure, then hired a bunch of programmers to stitch the content delivery network together with duct tape and bailing wire, and when it didn't work this week, well then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"oops we spent all this money on building our CDN and it doesn't work, now we can't afford to outsource it to a platform that already works. i guess we'll just delay it indefinitely"
way to go guys. great job. leaving a significant fraction of your customer base with no way to consume your product
as i mentioned before:
