Default Wondering on a center console/armrest area swap for ek

Just to clarify, I have already been searching for about 2 days now. I have a 99 civic ex. I was messing around with my car today and was wondering about swapping the center console area. Specifically to get rid of those badly placed cup holders, and find a better center console area to place stuff. I know it might be some work/cutting, but I was liking the 06-11 center console area.
Really I want to know if anyone has done this before and how the process went? Other than fastener screws, do the dimensions fit closely or what? Do any other nicer consoles from other cars / models fit into mine?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Car specs:
99 civic ex
1.6L single cam w/ vtec
d16y8

first time posting with you guys, so thanks for all who help me out.

If you can get it to fit, you can make it work. All it takes is a little fabrication, guts, maybe some blood.

The real question is can you make it look like it was supposed to be there?

I want to say yes, but who knows as my first time doing it. The biggest thing I'm worried about is the width dimension (making sure it will be close enough to get the screws into the fasteners). Other than that, I think I can make some cuts to get the end of the console and the previous console to line up. At least until I find another solution for the front half (the old cup holders and the little cubby area). I also have an auto so I have the e-brake right in the way, but I was planning to re position that to the side for now.

Not sure if it will look right but if you are persistent and good with modifying things...why not.

Yeah looking at them side by side seems like it might not even fit because of where the shifters are

The shifter assembly looks like the problematic factor. They aren't interchangeable so that may be something to consider before going into the project
