The Official Formula 1 2017 Season Thread
Valtteri Bottas
Championship position - 3rd, 305 points
Brundle: Handled the early pressure well, and took an early win, but went on the missing list after August - although I'm not sure if he went missing or rather Lewis turned up with his A-game. Saturday in Brazil when he took pole position after Lewis put it in the fence was a brilliant day for him because it showed he could lead a team when required. He disappointingly failed to seize the chance in Brazil on race day but made amends with a classy victory from pole in Abu Dhabi.
Croft: It all looked so good in the first half of 2017 but he couldn't find an answer to the form of Lewis Hamilton. That's no disgrace, but is he there to win a championship or be a number two? Saying that, the way he coped in Sochi, when Vettel was coming back at him, was absolutely superb. He's a thoroughly nice guy but nice guys don't always come first so maybe he needs to be a bit nastier on occasion.

Formula 1 2017: Rating the drivers | F1 News
Brundle and Croft are pretty diplomatic in reviewing Bottassssesesss''s's season
Unless there is a significant dumbing down and standardizing of components and both Merc and Ferrari leave I don't see AM having much success. Someone on F1T posted the following numbers.
That funding gap is massive.
Fiat group's revenue last year was 111 billion.
Ferrari's revnue last year was 3.1 billion.
Aston Martin's revenue last year was 600 million.
Ferrari's revnue last year was 3.1 billion.
Aston Martin's revenue last year was 600 million.
AM's going to supply engines not build cars. I agree though you're probably talking $60-100M out of pocket just to get more than 1 cylinder on a dyno.
Ferrari spends almost $0 on F1 due to massive share of TV revenue.

Maybe Merc is a better model to look at then. Wasn't there a report of them spending $300M on the PU? I wonder if F1 wouldn't be better off in the long run if they call Ferrari and Merc bluff and then both leave. Sure F1 would lose a bit of luster at first but if the series became much healthier you know that Ferrari wouldn't be able to stay away for long plus F1 might be able to pull back Toyota, Ford, and BMW.
The problem AM will have (and anyone else coming in) is the lessons learned by current PU manufacturers concerning the lean burn combustion and precise ignition control. Honda still doesn't have that figured out. That stuff will still be very important with the proposed 2021 PUs even sans a MGU-H.
you can't uninvent something once it's out there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
if we know about it then you know damn well everyone in the sport knows the handful of ways there is to implement it

No but the rising rate fuel flow limit and the overall fuel limit make it moar of an issue. At least Mr. Illien seems to think so. I won't argue with him.
Implementation isn't the problem, it's mastering it. Honda has been trying for ages now and even Renault took a long time to get it right. Porsche prob has a good idea of what is needed given the WEC experience but AM and others will need to build up that know how. Or steal people with it.
Is why I said if Ferrari and Merc leave then it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

i expect the engines will be much closer in 2021 no matter what the badges say. we're talking about powerplants that won't turn a lap for 4+ years
if you think FOM is going to let another engine manufacturer turn up in '21 and do another multi-year run of dominance then you must be...something
Granted Brawn is the new sheriff so maybe it will go better.
Brawn says he doesn't want anything artificial. He wants a meritocracy but wants the gaps easier to close down for teams that are behind. If that's the case I would not hold your breath for success ballast.

Seems like it wasn't just Honda that suffered from incompetent boobery. If McLaren had run their shake down when they wanted too Honda would have been able to fix the oil tank and the mention of driveshaft and brake issues in Australia. Plus the broken ICE in Spain that pissed out oil when Fred's car was picked up was due to a loose oil line. I'm curious to see what moar info comes out. Yeah Honda PU sucked again and was the biggest issue, but it wasn't the only issue. McLaren better fix this **** for next year if they want to be close to the front. A loose oil line breaking an ICE next year will be really bad.

--Look back on this season and tell me what you have to keep in mind.
"First of all, we were unable to run satisfactorily in the first winter test and it was a big minus, which was technically not a big problem, but lack of preparation was revealed.Winter test is a very important test but it can only run for 8 days (4 days x 2), even if the schedule of disjointedness is good for 8 days, it will be done in 2 weeks at a stretch, so if we had some problem in the first day,it will effect the next days work.So i means there was no time to get back when we failed. The biggest thing was that we could not run properly, the program did not start well. "
---What was the problem with the winter test?
"The oil tank did not work well, We tested it on the bench with Gforce simulation, but it was worse than we expected when on the track. In short there is not enough preparation. It is the basic concept of the engine this year By changing the position of the compressor in the turbo, the oil tank was forced to change shape to avoid it, because of its shape, the oil was biased during deceleration and it did not absorb well. "
--How long did the problem last?
"As soon as we dealt with the problem, we came to be able to run soon.On the other hand, this is not a problem of ours, but the shakedown test scheduled one week ago is delayed because some problem from Mclaren side. When shakedown was working as planned, the measure should have been able to be done .... F1 was truly limited in running time, so the response to that was sweet. "
--Several problems came out since the season started.
"The next stuff is Bahrain, in the Bahrain there were four turbo destroyed in a stretch, Stoffel could not run, it was a big failure, but not only in Bahrain, but similar things happened in the whole first half of the season. It was not a big mechanical problem, but it happend again and again... ... For example, in Australia it was great that we had lost something like brakes or drive shafts. So many issues. "
--When did you settle the turbo problem in Bahrain?
"Unfortunately the turbo problem has been tailed to the end, as it took time to fix it after the problem was found, but since measures were taken, reliability and performance rised a bit I think. "
--What was the specific problem with the problem of the turbo?
"This year the shaft got longer due to changing the location of the turbo. There was a problem with the bearings supporting that shaft. It is MGU-H rather than the turbo itself, after all the bearing breaks. It is not a responsibility of the bearing maker but a problem of how to use it, because it was not supposed to use it, it is a matter of design. The problem of the turbo has indeed drawn the tail. "
--What kind of symptoms does the bearings of the shaft of the servo get burned?
"It will break the engine with a single shot."
--If it breaks, you have to change the engine. Then you can penalize it?
"We used four engines for both cars before the summerbreak, it was a terrible situation that I got a grid-down penalty every time I opend a new engine, which was a big penalty anyway. The race strategy is going wrong and the driver's motivation Because this penalty system is not good, it ruins the game, it is not the driver's responsibility. "
--In the past, you can use the engine without any limits.
"When I was doing in the third stage We could test all the time during the season and the engine for the race was putting in a one race at a time.We repeatedly tested it during the summerbreak and used the good engine to the next race. The engine was also broken, but the damaged one has ended in the race, and the next race we will have a new engine. It is different now.But it is regulation, So We had to make a corresponding movement, and I myself had to change my mind, we did not do well. "

i've never tried it or known anyone who has. i've always seen it out there though.

I wasn't commenting on the ***** PU or the lack of power. I am moar concerned about the mistakes McLaren seemed to be making last year that teams like Merc and RB do not make. Ferrari made a few of these and it came back to bite them. McLaren better get their house in order too or Fred gonna start ripping into the team.
i'm glad you shared this. if ALO has learned anything since becoming a 0x WDC over the last 11 seasons, it had better be to remember where his bread gets buttered.
in other words it was convenient to throw honda under the bus and he's apparently learned to keep the message about mclaren positive. something button was able to do even when the car was completely *****.
