Yeah, that's a great post. I've referenced that before and I'm sure I will be again but I didn't know he sold connectors. I got them from "diytuning702" on eBay.

Here's where I'm at currently with the wiring harness...

Also got a nice little present from UPS yesterday...

I've met the guy from diytuning702 before. He was super nice. Keeps all that random OEM stuff in stock.

That's good to know in case I need others in the future. I got the connectors I ordered yesterday and they look like they are good quality

So this happened yesterday....

I actually didn't intend to drop the motor yesterday but I was in the garage doing some cleaning and organizing the suspension components I removed and the next thing you know, the motor's out. It was already so close to being ready to come out once I started working on it a little bit I figured I might as well get it out completely. Once I get a day when the weather is decent and I have some free time, I'll roll the whole engine/trans outside and do some serious degreasing.

In addition to cleaning up the engine, my plan is to clean and re-coat the front wheel wells then install the suspension components so I can roll the whole car outside and thoroughly degrease the engine bay as well.

Other things to tackle with the engine out...
  • Clean & paint subframe
  • Replace steering rack bushings & inner tie rods
  • Clean & re-loom wiring
The clutch in the car felt ok when I drove it but I'm considering doing a clutch replacement while I have easy access to everything just for peace of mind. As I went through this process and now that I'm able to get a better look at everything, there are lots of issues and things that were poorly done by whoever did the swap. The decision to pull the motor is now looking like something that was more of a necessity in order to correct some of these issues.

What other jobs should I consider doing now while the engine is out of the car?

If the rack needs new bushings, and the inner ends are bad, I would just replace the entire rack and outer TREs. You have all the access you need!

I never priced the inners...

I already have the inner and outer TREs so I figured I would just do the bushings too while I have access.

I started working on one of the wheel wells to figure what method would work best to remove all the old caked on grime. A heat gun and paint scraper seem to be best so now I just need a couple hours to scrape it all off.

I also test cleaned a section of the transmission case and it looks much better.

I have a couple days off over the holiday so I'm hoping to get the initial cleaning of the engine/trans done and get the wheel wells prepped for new undercoating. The transmission has three broken mounting bolts that I need to extract as well. I tried to get one of them out but I think I need a larger extractor so I need to pick one up and try again.

I got the initial degreasing on the engine and trans done yesterday and its already a big improvement. I read about people getting good results by cleaning with aluminum wheel cleaner so I need to pick some up to do the final cleaning. Hopefully that and scotchbrite pads will be able to remove most of the staining

These arrived in the mail...

100 yellow zinc plated M6x1.0 flange bolts. These are the same size as the "standard" Honda 10mm bolt that are used throughout the engine bay so I plan to replace them all with these. This is one of those little things that I'm hoping is going to make a huge difference in how the engine bay looks. To me, it just wouldn't be right to put all this work into refreshing this area only to re-install dirty, rusty hardware.

Nice! New fasteners are the bomb!

Glad you were able to find what looks like JIS fasteners...

I've made a little progress over the last week...

Driver side wheel well coated

Passenger side wheel well done

Transmission cleaned

Test sprayed part of the engine bay

Over the last few days I was able to finish cleaning the transmission. After the initial degreasing, I used wire brushes on my drill and Dremel to remove the deep grease stains. The next phase is to clean the engine the same way. I was also able to finish prepping the wheel wells and spraying fresh undercoating. In between other projects I've been working on prepping the engine bay. I couldn't help but spray a section to get an idea of how its going to look when its done. Seeing how good this part looks is good motivation to keep me moving along.

I need to finish refreshing the rest of the front suspension components so I can get those back on the car, the coilovers installed, and ultimately get this rolling again. Then I will shift all my attention to the engine bay.

Its been a little while since I've had any updates but I have been making slow progress on the car. Mostly just collecting parts right now. I have had some time off work for the holidays but time with family and below freezing temps has kept me from getting a lot done. I bought some OEM odds and ends that I needed and ordered some used ITR front lower control arms and front sway bar. The cold weather has also created some issues with my undercoating curing properly so I've been holding off on assembling the front suspension. I'm probably just going to have to put everything together and wait for it to cure when it warms up. I did manage to pull out my steering rack so I can easily replace the tie rod ends and I got some new bushings for the rack as well that I'll replace while I have it out. I'm going to get really busy at work for the next couple weeks so progress will be slow but hopefully I can keep chipping away on prepping everything for installation and assembly this spring.

No thread on that car. It was my first car that I got when I was 15. I put a lot of work into that car and sold it in college but that's the one I wish I still had today. Unfortunately, my old external hard drive was stolen so I don't even have any photos of the car.

That's what came with the car and seems to be working fine so I'm sticking with that for now. I would like to upgrade to an LS or GSR hydro trans later on

Well, I got out and did a little work on cleaning the steering rack and engine bay on Sunday. I had to run my heat gun to defrost my degreaser and to keep it from turning to ice after I sprayed it. I do have a gas heater in my garage too so I turned that on too and it made it bearable for about 30 minutes of work. Parts are continuing to come in as well. I got new steering rack boots so I think I have everything I need to refresh the steering. A lot of the cleaning and painting type jobs require warmer weather so I'm just trying to keep chipping away at some of the little things I am able to do now.

That should be a fun setup. Good luck! My long term plans include installing a Jackson Racing supercharger on the B20. I'm still at least a year away from that becoming a reality but it doesn't hurt to dream

Great progress man keep it up. I have the Progress Sport Coilover set up with the 350/350 springs. I'd be interested to know how the 450s work out for you since I have the B18c in mine? I have the GSR front sway bar as well but the car is currently in the build up stage.
