98 civic cx hatch ls/vtec
Crucify me all you want but I have been burning thru countless threads and forums and can only come up with this solution for my swap.
I'm swapping a B18a1 with a Pr3 b16 head into my 98 Civic Cx hatchback. I know a P28 is needed, however, my car is non vtec and Auto. So I know I need a M/T vtec p28 and get it chipped, then an obd2 to obd1 harness to run the p28. Which is the best p28 ecu to use? Also, my main question is that I can "maybe" use my stock harness with a few mods to the harness??? Is this correct or am I dead wrong??? Another big question is what upgrades to the p28 ecu do I need to do to get it to work for my 98 civic cx? Also, since the car needs to be tuned what is the best FC/piggy back system and other electronics for my hatch do I need to tune it correctly? And if my stock 98 cx harness will not work which harness do I need?

The P28 ECU is the most common, and thus most economical, version available between 1992 and 1995. This model is suggested because it will have all of the basic function/control pathways activated on the circuit board to operate your LS/Vtec. Although the P05 and P06 ECU's lack the VTEC devices and O2 heater circuit (P05 only), these components can be added to create a "P28" equivalent. So when you ask "which is best"... the truth is ANY will do. The best, most economical choice is the Hondata s300. Yes, you need to tune it correctly... there is no stock factory ECU for a LS/Vtec engine combination.
Yes, it is best to use the engine harness that you already have in the car and modify it to fit your new engine combination. The good news is that since your engine harness is automatic, there are MANY extra plugs that have unneeded wires in them that can be re-purposed for your VTEC needs... and then move the corresponding pin at the ECU to the new desired location.
I have spared you... now go and build.

Ty for that informative post. I have all the info I need now and will have my swap done soon and will post pics. I have a B20B otw to put in my other Honda but this swap is more important to me and im appreciative for ur knowledge.
My friend and I are debating over the B18a1 block and the B20B block out of a 98 CR-V; about which one is the best to turbocharge. From my research the B20B needs more than just the head swapped over but from what I've read it needs to be resleeved and from my understanding the pistons aren't very strong. Where as the B18 wouldn't be too much better but the guy I bought the engine from had already had the motor and head built for a turbo and I'm not trying to build yet another engine from the ground up for a turbo like my previous Supra engines, it tends to cost more than originally planned and there is always speed bumps. I'm not sure about a high compression engine and a turbo so Idk what to do except hope for the best. Put turbo ls/vtec in my 98 and the B20B in my 99 coupe ex. With a few bolt-ons and a decent flowing head I figured the B20 would be a nice DD with plenty of torque and reliability. While the 98 hatch I can drive for fun and on the weekends.
My Honda friend says to put the PR3 b16 head on my b20 and get rid of the B18a1 block all together. He knows a lot more about Honda's, but just Honda's as I know more about all other cars and I'm catching him on the Honda knowledge also. What would an experienced Honda enthusiast do? I want a B-series motor in both my Civics and on top of that the coupe has a BHG and I hate the D16y8 when it's not turbocharged. My brother is turbocharging his d16, it's a 98 ex coupe and I've seen d16's with the right tune and the right set-up be amazing. So no more D-series engines for my cars. Just these B-series ones and down the line maybe a K swap if I still own one of them. I want to drive my coupe Daily since it looks better and there is more mods to the car itself to make it more comfortable so that's why I want to put the B20 in it. Am I going about this all wrong? Should I switch the B16 head to the b20? I would only have one fast Honda then and my cx would remain stock and I don't want that. All I need is a reason to keep the ls/vtec engine together as to get me to put it in my hatch, but High Compression and turbo?? I guess I would only have it for a short time before it goes kaboom!!! But I go through cars like Donald Trump goes thru wigs hair product. I don't need the pros and cons of each engine just some opinions from the OG's on here telling me what they would do and that 'll be good enough for me.
