That's why I included the wording encourage manufacturers. Give them incentives to make better e cars and support systems rather than set an arbitrary date. All the arbitrary date does is allow manufacturers to take their jolly old time advancing the science, the consumer be damned.

I disagree with people being forced to buy a potentially inferior product. I would think/hope battery and support tech would be to the point that it won't be a problem in 2040 but then again weren't we supposed to have flying cars by now?

Besides if E cars are so great in 2040 there won't need to be a ban on petrol/diesel engines.

you may disagree but gov't steering industry like this has been highly effective in the past. you think car manufacturers would have addressed smog problems on their own in the 1970s?

To me this is a little different. Manufacturers were given targets that they had to meet for smog, but were not told how to meet it. They weren't limited in what they could or couldn't do. Here a potential avenue for development is being cutoff.

Not to mention there will be some people who won't give up their petrol IC engines and as they age they will be worse than a newer vehicle. What then, ban petrol IC engines?

Red Barchetta anyone?

more hyperbole

they were given a target this time too: stop burning petrol. seems drastic. that was the point. here we are talking about it. the announcement was hyperbole too. a lot is going to change in 23 years.

I guess my biggest fear is the ability to drive 500 miles is going to take 2 days with the way alternative fuel vehicles are right now. I have trouble believing that the proper infrastructure will be assembled between now and 2040.

Now that I think about it, I hope all of Europe bans petrol vehicles and does so sooner rather than later. Cheaper fuel for me.

23 years is a long time. I wonder what the most popular fuel source in 2040 will be.

Serious question, does this ban include things such as jet engines?

The moar I think about this new law the moar it seems like "feel good we did something" legislation. The French law about no vehicles prior to 2000 in Paris is a black and white law, the 2040 law is not black and white. What if I live in another country and buy a new petrol vehicle in 2045 then decide to move to the UK a year later. What happens then?

What if I buy a new 2039 petrol vehicle then decide to swap in a petrol engine from 2045 in 10 years. Can I import a used 2042 model in 2045?

The last 2 can be considered your beloved hyperbole, the first 1 is a much moar believable in my eyes.

Saw this posted on F1T. Poster post frequently and usually doesn't partake in hyperbole. I cannot verify the numbers tho, but is interesting.

75% of the airborne particulates in London come from wood-burning heating that was to save us and the planet contrary to the impression we are given, our city air quality has not deteriorated - it is better than ever what's changed is that the W.H.O has halved it's idea of the safe NOx level (without real evidence) we now know more about particulates, but particulates haven't changed their behaviour because of this

I like to play the what happens if this comes to pass game. It's how my brain works. It's wonderful when trying to visualize the impact of changes to workload or work related procedures or project planning but is not so good when dealing with politicians lol.

I noticed the part in the article I read that mentioned how diesels were pushed down erryone's throat as the solution to climate change 10 years ago and now they are saying diesels are killin' erryone oh noes!!!!! What a cluster ****!

Umm, this is exactly how "let them figure it out" didn't work. You'll never believe this, but one of, if not the largest automaker IN THE WORLD actually lied about the efficiency and cleanliness of their diesel products. So the terrible thing that is diesel (environmentally speaking anyways) is still the same ole terrible problem it's always been. Clean diesel was a marketing gimmick.

Long time ago people spoke about the horror of filling stations on every street corner if petrol powered cars took off. Back then petrol cars were **** and messy. No one then could imagine their improvement when they were initially introduced. It's the same type of problem now; the industry to support fuel cells/EV's will have to built. And the people that figure that out, will become very rich.

A guy I know off at work drives his Model S back and forth from SATX to Houston. that **** cray.

So were the politicians, who were the ones pushed the diesels with all the incentives they offered the public, sold a tale by the manufacturers or did they use faulty research/science to come to these conclusions? Was the VAG cheating going on before the WHO halved the arbitrary NOx levels or after? I honestly do not know the answer to either.

Is there a supercharger between SATX and Houston

Speaking of oil burners...

In a Technical Directive issued to the teams ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, it has reminded them that an oil consumption limit of 0.6 litres per 100km was deemed to be acceptable – and would now be "strictly enforced" from 2018.

However, mindful that some manufacturers could struggle to get within that limit with current engines, there has been no push to strictly limit oil use up until now.

For having analysed the engine situation over the first half of the year, the FIA has now ruled that any new power unit introduced from the Italian GP will have to adhere to a limit of 0.9 litres of oil use per 100km.

Alonso was asked whether he had any positives so far from the 2017 season, he said: "Yes, the Indy 500.
