The Official Formula 1 2017 Season Thread
something something about long straight at Baku requires the lead car to hang back just before the restart - or they might overtake the SC before it pulls in and create a situation where the leading cars would get bunched up to avoid passing it. There was an incident at last year's GP2 race.
The incident is considered to have been compounded by the unusually long, high-speed run down to the first safety car line around the Baku City Citcuit, forcing drivers to leave a larger gap than usual to the safety car before it peels into the pit lane.
Hamilton was warned by his team on the first safety car restart to be more cautious prior to returning to full speed as he risked catching the safety car before it returned to the pit lane.
Last year's GP2 race was marred by chaotic restarts when Nobuharu Matsushita sped up and slowed down on the run to the line after almost catching the safety car, causing confusing and contact from rivals behind. He was given a one-race ban for the incident.

Here's a though. Why not have the SC pull off earlier so **** like that doesn't happen. Find a spot earlier in the straight or b4 the last corner where SC can pull off and park while the field goes by. Then have the SC return to the pits after the cars are a safe distance down the track.
Yeah, and I mostly agreed with HAM. I think the problem is the Baku marshalls are screwed over by the track setup and the FIA don't want no VSC tractor incident again. There are no cranes in Baku so they had to have tractors out on the circuit.
I think the reason for the SC vs the VSC is that it bunches the field up.
The shots of the guys running around picking up debris made it seem like they were out there for a long time. With the VSC, the field is spread out all over the track and they wouldn't have enough time with a clear track to go out and pick up the bits.
with the SC, you let the whole field stream by and then you have a couple minutes to run out and grab bits without a car coming around the corner.
Back when VER drove across the grass to stay in front of Vettel and then didn't give the spot up, when Vettel pulled up along side after the race I was expecting him to bump the redbull lol.
Buxtons interview with Vettel was 11/10 cringe. I would have thought Vettel would have got his BS story figured out during the cool down lap

On last lap of SC period, lead car should get VSC and becomes the SC for the rest of field. Or is this not spicy enough for the show and we need a SC out there for marketing purposes?
When the FIA comes up ideas they need to test them on toddlers first. That will show them any potential loop holes.
No urgency to do it. I don't care about parking the Fit outside, have been doing so since the day I got it. AP1 is safe & sound in the garage, so all is well.
