The Official Formula 1 2017 Season Thread
Even with all the Peugeot engine failures at least McLaren-Peugeot got some podiums in 1994. I wouldn't be mad if McHonda finish last.
Bring back engines that only had to last 1 race. #makef1greatagain
rev limits was the wrong turn

to be fair i was all onboard for the complex engine tech. i didn't expect so much effort end up focused on exotic combustion / fuel tech that isn't applicable outside of F1. i thought it would spur more hybrid R&D and would help breakthrough something with batteries or energy recovery, but it seems like there's one optimal solution for that and everyone is converging on it and that's the end of it.
tech/complexity for it's own sake is a waste to me. i was hoping the engine regs would spur development of technology that would be useful elsewhere, but it isn't clear that anything that's been implemented in F1 engine tech will trickle down to anything else. it's just really exotic to optimize for the specific technical regulations of F1 and nothing else.
e.g. nothing like VTEC or hybrid power innovations have come out of the new engine formula yet. instead we got jet engine igniters in precombustion chambers, exotic fuel mixes that aren't relevant anywhere else, and oil formulations with combustion products in them to cheat the fuel flow regs.

I'm ready to say lets go back to a atmospheric engine displacement limit along with a total fuel limit. The reason I say ditch the turbos is as much as I want to see 1400 hp qualifying setups, which is what would happen with turbos and unlimited fuel flow, FIA won't allow it. Engines have to do 1 full race weekend, no exotic metal use. I'd like to limit the number of aero updates teams can use during the season but I'm not sure that would really help control costs. Get rid of DRS, bring back KERS and make its use unlimited.
I'm sure there are some flaws in there but its what I'v come up after a little bit of thought. Can't be much worse than what we got.
last thing brawn floated was go back to naturally aspirated engine + simple KERS.
this might be a good compromise to keep the engine mfrs in the sport (marketing teams can keep banging the hybrid drum) but it would also make engines simple enough for honda to build.

Not only that but it would allow for the likes of Cosworth and such to return to the sport. Having an engine not tied to a manufacturer/works operation would be a good thing I think.

Harriers just landed. Damn fence got in the way so the pics of the planes are blurry. The fence is crystal clear tho. Used the far runway so could get a good shot of them in the air.
unless wind direction is dictating runway use, there's probably noise / security restrictions determining the active runway.
Shirley they noticed some ****** kept coming out of the NWS offices so they thought it was better to keep the exotic birds away from buildings.

With Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne running more similar downforce levels in FP2, the main speed trap in Baku showed the new power unit at 327km/h, with Vandoorne getting just up to 312 km/h with the ‘Spec 2’ version.
There remains plenty of room for improvement though, with the fastest speed recorded through the trap being 354 km/h by the Force India-Mercedes of Esteban Ocon.

Just checked and it was the 7 plane that turned over. Probably doing press or VIP rides as it was reported that two people were in the plane, condition unknown.
Good news, kinda. The F16 was taxiing when a gust of wind flipped it over. No injuries reported at this point
Article I read said they were doing some prep **** for the show this weekend.

Lots of LSRs out of Wilmington, OH office.
However, looking at the KDAY obs the highest gusts was 21 kt which is 24 mph
Some inside info

Dayton Daily News photographer Ty Greenlees is on the scene. He reports photographer Ricardo von Puttkammer told him he saw the two-seat Thunderbird land and taxi toward the staging area when it appeared that a gust of wind flipped the F-16 on its top. Von Puttkammer is chief correspondent for Aviation Photojournal in New York City.
