tesla just let go their head of self-driving software development after 6 months and replaced him with another golden boy. the word on the street is that tesla's sensor system is at it's limit of what it can do with radar and cameras and they need LIDAR like everyone else uses to make further progress. but you're right none of this matters when buying something new and trendy is a social statement. all aboard the hype train!

i'm really just a pessimist that doubts everything. it kinda sucks but my work forces me to assume everything's broke until i can gather enough empirical evidence to prove otherwise.

so it's easy for me to look at anything, find the flaws, and declare "that'll never work" then human behavior trumps the negatives and flawed ideas take off anyway.

I'm the same way. People come up with ideas at work and I list reason why it won't work. So much to the point I have been labeled by a few as "fearing change" My response to those idiots was I fear stupid change. Of course 9 out of 10 times what I said would happen and why **** won't work ends up being what happens.

Regarding Aptera, I had a high-ranking coworker announce to a group of us that he had put a deposit down on one when they were announced. I quickly blurted out "bad idea. they'll never make it to production," without thinking about what I said. He took offense and it was actually a bad career move to diss this guy publicly. I ended up changing jobs and moving away which was probably for the best.

I don't think they're doing anything exotic with their batteries compared to other electric cars.

edit - googling indicates some tweaking to the chemistry but fundamentally the same tech as any other electric car
