I was thinking the opposite direction. Alonso qualifying 5th is pretty damn impressive considering his lack of seat time and it's pretty sad that the rest of the field can get outqualified by a guy from a different series that just hopped in an open car.
Yes, 5th is damn impressive. I'm not knocking him by saying he was outqualified by two of his teammates. I'm just saying that anything can happen because it's a long race. Hinch was on pole last year but finished 7th while Rossi started 10th and won.
that is a curious fact. is it just random chance or does starting near the front hurt you over 500 miles? people talk about the swirl that gets going where the air starts traveling in the same direction as the cars after a while. if you're in front at the start you're pushing that air around until it gets moving.
or is it a combo of that and psychological: maybe people at the front in the early part of the race overdrive trying to stay there while someone mid pack is taking it easy until the final dash so they have more in reserve?

Alonso's whereabouts at the time remain unconfirmed.
Around four hours after winning pole position for the 101st Indianapolis 500, Scott Dixon, along with three-time Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti, was robbed at gunpoint.
There are rumours in Italy that say Hayden pulled out the junction without looking before the car hit him. It’s also being investigated whether the fact Hayden was listening to music could have been a factor. Investigators found headphones connected to an iPod at the scene.
