The Official Formula 1 2017 Season Thread
Gonna be close. The line of storms down near Jasper are moving almost due north. Rough estimate would put them into Indy in 3 to 3.5 hours. Warm front looks about 30ish miles south of the speedway. Front is prob pretty close to Bloomington.
Unless you are say Mr. Newgarden I guess. Seems pretty stupid to list the T car then. Reading through the qualifying flow chart is like prepping for deep sea diving lol. I'm not sure why they messed with it so much. The old way was pretty damn exciting, so much so that certain high profile teams occasionally failed to qualify!
That being said, the top level teams are badass at engine changes. Dixon blew one up last year and the car was back in the qual line in less than an hour.
So did they change the rules to try and help with costs? Since teams don't have to have 6 or 8 fully built cars now. Is the T position on the Q list just basically a blank spot or can the driver still go during the T slot position? Fred would roll 8 if T car slot counts or 15 if the T car slots don't mean anything.
He tried to catch the back end. 99% of the time at Indy it doesn't end well. I hope he can still make the 500
He hit the SAFER Barrier which def helped him.

I wonder if the right rear winglet would've been enough to keep him planted if they didn't try a staggered aero setup. Someone thought it must've been worth the drag reduction. Not sure if Bourdais' engineer Craig Hampson is back at work as he was sick the other day.
Sebastian is awake and alert but likely has multiple pelvis fractures and a hip fracture. Safe to say that tub is done and he's out for the foreseeable future. That was a hell of a hit though.
The teams generally don't have the budget for a fully built spare, the manufacturer ls don't have the resources to build that may spare engines, and the cost control wouldn't allow it anyway. You'd probably be surprised at how shoestring the whole operation is, each team is probably an order of magnitude off of an equivalent Cup team.
The T car position, as far as I know, is strictly an Indy-only ceremonial thing at this point. They don't do it (or the drawing) at any of the other speedway events.

Open wheeled racing in the states has always been like that as far as funding goes. Only a few name brand teams weren't on shoestring budgets. Penske and Ganassi come to mind. Newman-Haas too, though they weren't really to the level of the first 2
