88-91 civic model interchangibility guide (crx, hatch, sedan, & wagon).

got sent a pm about a clutch for a civic, then linked to a decent "list" about interchangability between the models/years and thought this would be a good time to list everything out for these cars as it isnt as simple as youd think depending on the year of your car. i figured having played with these cars for so long and the fact ive been burned by so many stupid little things that i assumed were the same through all the different models, so i figured this might save a few people some headaches. i know theres a lot of ef entheusists around, post up what youd had to figure out the hardway. also, no reason not to ask ef specific questions in here too. will always spark good convos with tips and tricks that can prove helpfull.

basically, this thread is for whats compatible and what isnt between the years. i think we should leave it to civic stuff though. whats compatible between civic and integra would be a hugeass thread in itsself and feel free to start one if youd like

im going off memory (and im old), so if i get anything wrong please correct me and ill update this post. theres also no shame in the cut and paste from other threads. as they file in, ill cut and paste into the op and catagorize so thier easier to locate.

ill start with clutch info since thats what got me thinking about all this...

Clutch and trans

clutches and trannys are interchangeable between all models, including the rt4wd's, but not all years. 1988 imput shaft splinecount is 21 (iirc) and 1989+ d-series trannys have a splinecount of 20 (iirc). imput shafts seem to be interchangable between all years (example: you can put a 91 rt4wd imput shaft in a 88 rt4wd tranny). a breakdown about the clutch hardware interchangability below.

88 clutchplate will only work in a 88 tranny.
88 clutchplate and flywheel will work with 89+ trannys.
89 clutchplate will work in 89+ trannys, but only with the 88-89 flywheel.
90-91 clutchplate will work with 89+ trannys, but only with 90+ flywheels.

one thing to keep in mind... none of the 1.5 blocks have the threaded bungs for the rt4wd intermediate shaft. only the 1.6 blocks have the inserts, including vtec, sohc, & dohc varieties.

BRAKES

front discs -
hatch, crx, and sedan are interchangable in dx/lx trim. ex sedan is specific.
wagon is specific, not sure if specific between rt and base.
rear drums -
hatch, crx, and sedan are interchangable in dx/lx trim. ex sedan & rt are specific (bigger).
rear discs - can be done
Crx can have integra disc or 91 Crx si disc (just need 91 si ebrake cables)
Hatch can have integra disc or 91 Crx si disc (just need 3 dr teg ebrake cables)
Sedan can have integra disc or 91 crx si disc ( just need 4 dr teg ebrake cables)
(with these swaps do not use teg compensat or arms or toe arms (use your body style ones)

EXTERIOR

fenders -
Hatch any year to any year
Sedan any year to any year
Crx any year to any year
Wagon any year to any year
headlights - interchangable between all years, but buckets are 88-89 & 90-91 specific due to different corner install (eliminating external screws).
corner lights - all model specific, no interchangability.
88-89 corners can be updated to 90-91 with correct headlight buckets and corner hardware.
bumper lights -
88-89 crx, hatch, sedan, and 88-91 wagon will interchange, but variations exist (some clear, some orange etc.).
90-91 hatch and sedan will interchange
90-91 crx i believe are specific.
front bumpers -
88-89 hatch will bolt onto 90-91 hatch and visa versa, but you will want matching rear bumper and mouldings.
88-89 crx will bolt onto 90-91 crx and visa versa, but you will want matching rear bumper and mouldings.
88-89 sedan will bolt onto 90-91 sedan and visa versa, but you will want matching rear bumper and mouldings.
88-91 hatch, 88-89 sedan, 88-91 wagon are all interchangable (with minor modifications). 90-91 sedan front bumpers are too long for other models.
rear bumpers - all model specific, no interchangability other than 88-89 update or backdate to 90-91 (moulding changes).
doors -
88-89 hatch doors are not interchangable with 90-91 due to belt design.
88-89 crx doors are not interchangable with 90-91 due to belt design changes.
88-89 sedan and wagon will interchange with 90-91 doors (but not between sedan and wagon).
windshields -
88-91 sedan and wagon will all interchange.
88-91 hatch is specific.
88-91 crx no info.
side view mirrors - all model specific, no interchangability.
door hinges - all same
exhaust - all model specific, no interchangability.
hoods -
88-91 crx and hatch are all interchangable.
88-91 wagon are all interchangable.
88-91 sedan are all interchangable.

INTERIOR

steering wheels - all interchangable.
dash - most dash setups will interchange with monor mods.
door panels - all model and year specific, no interchangability (except listed).
88 crx and hatch panels are interchangable.
88-91 sedan panels can be used in wagon to upgrade to power windows/door locks with minor modifications.
heater/ac setup - al inchangable with exception of crx (electric hvac).
main relay - yes
fuel pump - yes
power door locks - Sedan will fit but need to mod stuff
seats - lots of info about swapping pans to make work.
e-brake console between the seats -
Crx pretty much is crx
Hatch and Sedan will swap out.
Wagon is wider than hatch and sedan so they will not swap.
center console - (if you can find them)
Wagon is longer due to raised height.
Hatch and Sedan swap any year will work.
seat belts- I believe yes
gauge cluster - yes. But need to be specific in year 88-89 and then 90-91 unless your in for changing dash wiring and also dash brackets.
cluster cover - no
HVAC - Tend to all swap out with each other just need to make sure of lines that hook to compresso r are different .
carpet -
Verified that Hatch carpet will fit in Sedan.

SUSPENSION

lcas - 100% interchangability between all years and models*.
*88 rear lca is specific, but 89-90, & 91 will interchange.
shocks/springs/coils - 100% interchangability between all years and models*.
* other than 88-91 rt.
strut tower bars - 100% interchangability between all years and models*.
*88-91 rt rear is more narrow and some will not fit without mods.
cross brace - yes?
sway bars - 100% interchangability between all years and models*.
*88-91 rt is not setup for rear sway without modifications.
trailing arms - 100% interchangability between all years and models*.
*88-91 rt rear trailing arms will not fit any other models.Last edited by shenrie; 12-31-2013 at 08:27 AM. Reason: updates

found this thread too:

https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-...ained-1961714/

could have sworn I've seen hatch and CRX bumpers on sedans. some had a noticeable gap under the front filler, others looked proper. I guess the trick is to use the correct rebar for the skin, but don't take my word for it; hopefully someone smarter can chime in

The only one that will suit your 90-91 sedan will be the 90-91 sedan bumper.

If you see another facelift sedan running a different bumper and it looks good, then there's been plenty of mods to get it to look right.

So are all wagon 88-91 front bumpers interchangeable with the other civics listed? Or is it 88-91 wagon models only. Im a bit confused on the wording

You may need the bumper support for the appropriate bumper but, for the most part, they’re swappable. You might wanna do some neasurements though before commiting. I know the sides of the bumpers are longer than others on certain efs.
