The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Volkswagen executive who faces charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, two people with knowledge of the arrest said on Sunday, marking an escalation of the criminal investigation into the automaker’s diesel emissions cheating scandal.

Mr. Schmidt played a central role in trying to convince regulators that excess emissions were caused by technical problems rather than by deliberate cheating. Much of the data presented to regulators was fabricated, officials of the California Air Resources Board have said.

Mr. Schmidt continued to represent Volkswagen after the company admitted in September that cars were programmed to dupe regulators. Starting in late 2014, Mr. Schmidt and other Volkswagen officials repeatedly cited false technical explanations for the high emissions levels, the state attorneys general said. In 2015, Mr. Schmidt acknowledged the existence of a so-called defeat device that allowed Volkswagen cars to cheat emissions tests.

Volkswagen eventually said that it had fitted 11 million diesel cars worldwide with illegal software that made the vehicles capable of defeating pollution tests

that's true. See you in Formula E etsy

Former Haas driver Esteban Gutierrez will compete in the Formula E race in his native Mexico after losing his seat for the 2017 Formula 1 season.

If you walked into the room halfway through a grand prix and looked at the TV, you wouldn't know what was happening with all the pitstops and variant strategies. Unless you watch it from the very beginning and understand how it's evolving, you can't follow it - whereas you can walk in halfway through a football match or a golf game and quickly pick up the dynamic.

I think F1 has to look at the race format, and the way it presents itself, so people can do that.

ya good point, probably not good to listen to him. Mercedes didn't win squat til he left. look what he did at Honda too. they had to bail out of the sport completely while he was running the show. what a disaster.

Jaguar wouldn't even run his XJR-14 at Le Mans.

2009 doesn't count because he had the Super Aguri diffusor that he didn't design himself.

He even tried to get it outlawed!

Imagine if he had been successful in having the FIA close the loop hole prior to 2009. Would Brawn GP have done anything in 2009? Would Brawn have even bought the outfit from Honda. Of course that leads to the question would Merc have entered F1 or would they have stayed with McLaren as the works team. Imagine Chocolate Senna still at McLaren (with works status) combined with Merc PU of the last few years.

my understanding is that he didn't "try" to get it outlawed, but he did intentionally bring it up to the FIA technical working group saying hey guys there's a potential loophole here. the group said nah not an issue. so he later used that as part of his argument when other teams were trying to get it banned. hay guise you already said it wasn't an issue!

it was a brilliant move. ah the fun you can have when the teams write the rules.

he later wrote a book about it, called The Art of the Deal.

wait, maybe it was called the art of the diffuser. i can't remember

Willem Toet basically admitted as much too. He said when Brawn went to the working group to "expose" this loophole, all he really seemed to do was convince the other members that they had a solution they wanted to run once the loophole was closed. So they blocked it.

Double move worked, one could say.

I was being a smart *** when I said he tried to outlaw it. It was well played!

Has Toet's piece on the diffuser already been posted? I vaguely remember it has been but I'm not 100% sure. Is a good read
