Johnny Herbert, Trulli, and Barrichello were left 1,2,3
Badoers car failed while in 4th and he cried on the side of the road
Hakkinen passed Irvine then Gene to get 5th, Gene finished 6th
You mentioned Herbert's win but it was the first and only win and first and only double podium for Stewart who would become Jaguar for the 2000 season.
Ferrari cost Irvine the championship at this race. Irvine pitted when he was called in and he sat in the pits for almost a minute while the team tried to find his right rear tyre. How did that cost him the Championship? 1 more point would have made the difference and Irvine was only 1.5 seconds behind Gene. Assuming Malaysia turned out the same Irvine would have had a 5 point lead heading into Japan (instead of 4). A Hakkinen win with Irvine 2nd would not have been enough to give Hakkinen the title. M Schu finished second in Japan with Irvine 3rd. Schu would have pulled over to let Irvine into 2nd if that would have been enough. Irvine could have been the one to end Ferrari's WDC drought.
It's nice hearing the races with Walker and Brundle...instead of Varsha and Hobbs.
I like Varsha and Hobbs but Walker and Brundle are so much better. I just wish Hunt had still been around lol. He was great at saying what needed to be said without sugar coating it.

You think Schu would help Irvine win the title for Ferrari? I no longer remember the details but I had the feeling he wouldn't have helped Irvine.

He said he would. He let Irvine win Malaysia when he was obviously faster than Irvine. I have no doubt Schu would have helped him win the title. He was even asked during a press conference before the Japanese GP if he would pull over and let Irvine pass if it meant he would win the Championship and he said "We all know the answer to that, Yes"
F1 is preparing for a radical overhaul of its aero regulations this year, with it hoped that wider and faster cars will improve the spectacle and help shake up the order. But Ecclestone thinks that the changes will not be enough. He suggests that until F1 scraps the turbo hybrid engines that he has long hated, then the situation will not get better.
"Red Bull believe they can beat Mercedes with better aerodynamics," said Ecclestone in an interview with Sport Bild. "However, I'm not so sure about that."Mercedes' advantage on the engine side still is large. Because of this we have to introduce new engine rules as soon as possible. It doesn't matter [what kind of engine rules]. The important thing is to rule out the hybrid engines.
I'm guessing Bernie is trying to get the ball rolling on new engines before we see what impact the removal of the token restrictions has on PU power differences.
According to FIA data provided to the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Albert Park is set to see an increase of mid-corner speeds between 20 and 50 km/h on mid-to-high speed corners, later braking points (between 20 and 30 metres), and lap times lowered to the tune of three to four seconds.
That has led to a number of safety-related revisions to the Albert Park layout, with tyre wall re-profiling at Turns 1, 6, and 14, as well as the use of over $100,000 worth of Tecpro high-speed barriers at Turn 12 – a first for the Melbourne circuit.
There have long been suggestions that Honda is planning a major overhaul of its power unit for the new season, but up until now it has been tight-lipped about the scope of its changes.Honda returned to F1 in 2015 with the much-hyped 'size zero' concept, pursuing a design that features a tightly packed power unit.In particular, it has featured a split turbo and compressor within the confines of the V-bank of its V6 engine. It is in contrast to Mercedes' concept of having its compressor at one end of the engine and the turbine at the other, which rivals have evaluatedIn an interview on the McLaren website, technical director Tim Goss confirmed that Honda had completed a redesign of its power unit based on the lessons of the past two seasons. The scope to make radical changes - potentially to mirror the concept put to such good effect by Mercedes - has been opened up by the scrapping of F1's engine development token system that limited modifications manufacturers could make."The token system that was applied to engine development for the past few seasons has been discontinued," Goss said.
"For 2017, the Honda engine architecture and layout have been altered to serve both for performance and packaging needs.
"The new power unit takes much of the learning from the past two seasons, but has been specifically redesigned for this season."
