Default CEL and Scanner

Hi all!
I recently bought a 97 honda civic DX hatchback. I've been using these forums to fix an old car i use to have 98 honda accord but i had to part ways with her.

The previous owner said there's 120k on the chassis and 70k on the motor; it currently has a 99 civic D16Y8. When I bought the car I knew it couldn't be 100% clean driven and well taken care of. So I started to do routine maintenance check and after about 1 week of driving it the CEL came on. I used a OBD2 scanner but kept getting an error message "Link error". Since that didn't work I tried to get the codes manually from the blue 2 pin plug on the passenger kick panel, however to my surprise that pin wasn't there.

The 1st and 2nd picture, I'm sure the blue pin im looking for is that green connector but I not 100% positive.

The 3rd picture, the guides and tutorials I've seen, the blue 2 pin should be visible to the left bottom of the dash glove compartment.

I've ran out of ideas, has anyone run into the same problems as I and have any leads to find a way to read the CEL?

Many thanks!

Yeah the green thing has the 2 wire blue plug that you can jump for codes I see it in the pic. Make sure you have a usdm ecu and not a JDM, otherwise you will have no Kline output(JDM) to the dlc and you won't connect with a scanner. If it's usdm and no communication then you need to check the power and ground to and from the dlc. Also make sure the other can line is connected, it communicates with the srs module/abs. And make sure you have continuity from dlc to Kline pin on ecu. This will solve your issues.

Hi all

I want to update you guys on whats been going on. I managed to pull the code manually and it blinked to code 23; knock sensor. I am not a car person but finding this challenge to be a pleasurable hobby so far.

Upon researching, i found out that the original stock 97 civic dx did not have vtec and a knock sensor. However the 99 civic ex engine d16y8 is capable of vtec. I believe the previous owner did not know how to convert it correctly, so I will have to find out how to fix this ordeal.

Anyways, as I spend more time with the car, I've been finding out little problems here and there. The other day I bled the cooling system, check out this mess!!!!!!

Oil is mixed in with the coolant and a oil gunk at the drain plug of the radiator. I came up with a range of possible causes:
  • head gasket?
  • valve cover?
  • Piston rings?
I also did a compression test as well:

1 2 3 4
Dry: 150 75 155 155
Wet:

I lost the sheet of paper when I did the test but from the wet test; they had a 5-10% change and some did not change.

There are many problems that I want to tackle down and I will do it one step at a time.

This CEL has been puzzling me. If the ORIGINAL engine has no knock sensor, is there a way for me to attach a knock sensor to the 99 d16y8 and somehow issue new wires to the ECU and the knock sensor to shut off the CEL?

If anyone has any insight at all, please drop a comment below with a few suggestions.

I will be having fun fixing this car and knowing it inside and out. I hope you guys will ride along and enjoy the ride as well.

The Y8 has a knock sensor so maybe they didn't hook it up?
