Nasr said Sauber needs luck to score points. Maybe the weather will help them.

I haven't kept up with the details of the Ferrari power unitted teams so I don't know who has current or year-old power units. I seem to remember that Sauber has the current power unit but is a few upgrades behind Ferrari. If so, then the Sauber is probably the worst car on the grid. They'll have a new floor before the season ends but I doubt it will help much.

Pre-coffee wording is bad wording. Not that my words are good to begin with.

Probably the worst drivers too, though Jolyon is fighting for it.
At least Palmer was a GP2 champ. Although Nasr did when the British F3 title...

But totes Sauber needs another Koba/Perez combo stat.

Also coffee is life.

Another race...another award. We don't win on the track, but we do seem to win over the hearts of the judges.

The Heroic Fix Award

Broke our trans 40 min into the race - (apparently 4th gear is a known weak point on these). Pulled into the garage and got the spare on in about 40 min. Pulled out of the garage to hear clunks of a bad intermediate shaft. Back to the garage where we pulled off the spare and tore down both transmissions to see if we could mate them. 4th gear was still good on the spare and the intermediate shaft was still 'good' (it had one chipped tooth) on the primary, so all was good but we needed a press...no one in the pits had one. We considered buying one at the local parts store, but we opted to head 1.5 hrs north to Erie to do the job at my brother-in-law's shop since he would have everything we'd need. Spent about an hour at his shop cleaning parts and reassembled what we could there - but we left a few bolts back at the track so we rolled back to Pittsburgh for final assembly.

It's now a little after 10:00 PM. With the trans build nearing completion we gave it a test spin on the bench and noticed a clunk with every rotation - not good. Turns out the spare trans (from a 4 dr Galant) has a taller 1st gear, which means the splines wouldn't match up with the input shaft. Things looked bleak... but then we decided - who needs 1st gear? Time to tear the trans apart yet again. With the help of an angle grinder, 1st gear was ground down to a shiny nub. By 2:30 AM the trans was back in the turtle and ready to start race #2 on Sunday.

We decided to go for short stints so everyone would get a chance to drive since at this point our cobbled together transmission was a ticking time bomb. All went well for the first stint as we were pacing with the pack - but a good 10 sec off the pace of the leaders (An LS swapped EF hatch running 2:02s to our 2:14s). 2nd and 3rd stints went fine, then it was my turn. I get in and the car wont start... pop the hood and the wires on the start are gone. No problem, bump start in reverse and off I went. Took me a few laps to get up to speed, then out of nowhere I noticed the car was really pitching the back end out to the right under hard breaking. At first I thought I had a puncture but then it looked like there had just been oil on the track, so I kept on. 2 laps later the handling was getting better but then I noticed the trans making noises in 4th and popping out. I slowed and tried 3rd. It worked...for a lap...So I limped back to the pits in 2nd and told the guys to meet me in the garage.

As I got out of the car, a few spectators starting asking about the car and one guy said - you got oil all down your right side wheels/tires. Turns out it wasn't oil, it was tranny fluid. Looked under the car and the drain bolt had come out and dumped all our trans fluid - which explained the handling going bad, and the eventual trans failure. The turtle was done for the day.

Is Ferrari willing or able to pay for their junior drivers to be at Sauber? I bet even a current spec engine won't help them if the car is that bad.

Not enough. 2 hours of Friday practice in the rain, 40 min on Sat on a drying track and about 2 hours on Sun.
