The Official Formula 1 2016 Season Thread
you mean like the guy that asked me to help him design server racks for his data center and when i detailed the engineering effort and cost he just went and bought sheets of plastic and started zip-tieing motherboards to them?
or the guy here on HT that wanted me to design an ECU for him, i owed him a favor, so i wrote up a detailed engineering spec for it outlining the design requirements, bill of materials, effort and cost and that was the last i heard of it. you think you can bang out an AEM EMS in a weekend?
i got invited to lunch with a former coworker today, turns out he wants me to come to his startup and fix his product that doesn't work. he offered to buy me lunch for the trouble. ummm

Actually, only problem I really have with being an engineer (mechanical in my case) is being "friends" on FB with all of the kids I grew up with who now own these dinky car shops and are trying to "develop" things.
One guy in particular is working on a bolt in AWD kit for civic/integra, and just posted a picture of his first load of parts that he just got in. Bunch of 1/8" flat plates that are supposed to hold an entire subframe together. I cringed.

They only get away with it because most of the US aftermarket is focused on drag racing where products only need to last minutes.

A606 cor-ten I believe.
All I'm saying is that it's all 1/8" sheet metal. The frame, the ribs that make up the skeleton, etc.
It essentially has to hold the weight of itself which is about 2600lbs iirc.
On top of that there is a lot of stuff that is bolted to the roof and inside of it after we are done with it.
So a subframe that would hold maybe 200 pounds of parts would probably be ok being built out of 1/8" sheet as long as it's engineered well.

“But there are also claims that Marchionne could not cope with Allison, because the Briton spoke his mind and refused to be dictated unreasonable targets in contrast to his (Allison’s) 25 years of motor sport experience,” he added.

So the chassis has gotten worse?
Formula 1 qualifying sessions will be red flagged from now on if a situation arises where double-waved yellows are required.
During the closing moments of qualifying in Hungary last weekend, controversy surrounded Nico Rosberg setting the pole position time going through a yellow flag zone, but this move means the session would have been stopped as soon as Fernando Alonso had spun.
The decision has been made to avoid debates about how much drivers should or shouldn't slow down under yellow flags and ensure an absolute enforcement of the rule.
"The procedure now would be to simply red flag it every time there is a double-waved yellow flag," said Whiting of what happened in Hungary.
"It [red flagging the session] will be done routinely if there is a double-waved yellow flag.
"It just removes the discussion about how much is 'slowing down'.

Why a red flag? Why not a VSC?
They should at least add enough time for another outlap if a session gets red flagged so it doesn't kill the session.
