99 civic d16y7 engine. just started having ignition problems. does not usually happen until engine gets to operating temp. anyhow, first the engine falls on its face randomly during driving, then once it comes to a complete stop, starter will spin the motor until the battery dies, but no spark. Feels like a fuel delivery problem when happening, but then acts like an electrical problem once car is stopped. have replaced fuel pump, plugs, distributor (new), etc. still happens. Need help plz!!!
like to add also that the only MIL (CEL) codes are for both O2 sensors and the catalytic converter.....nothing related to the ignition system, or sensors controlling ignition timing
One of the O2 codes has disappeared, but the remaining codes are P0133, and P0420. ((O2 B1 sensor1 slow response, and catalyst system effieciency below threshold B1) no new codes. These codes have been active in my car for years dispite changing BOTH O2 sensors and my catalytic converter twice. But thats not the issue here. Unfortunately, i have not had any of my electrical diagnostic equip with me when my ign goes dead. I will keep it with me so as to check my ign switch, main relay, etc when it dies. However, my rpms show an interesting drop (moreso than "usual") when my ac comp engages, and more interestingly, a HUGE drop when i turn the comp off! Ideas on that?
Well, i did not hear the fuel pump prime tonight when it happened again. So i would like to test both the main relay (which i understand also controls power to the fuel pump). I found some instructions on how to test the relay, but i also want to check the ign switch. What do i look for in terms of voltage and resistance on each of the circut paths?
When the car is running, start by once and for all fixing the two codes. The malfunctioning primary O2 sensor is killing the cat and also likely fouling the spark plugs. Test the two O2 sensor wires that run between the sensor connector and ECU.
Only when the engine won't start, unplug ECU connector A. Turn key to ON(II). Ground ECU connector A pin A16 (Grn/Yel wire). Does the fuel pump run as long as A16 is grounded?
I would also check for vacuum leaks along the intake manifold, or exhaust leaks before the primary 02 sensor. It is possible you could be suffering from a failing fuel pump or bad wiring to the fuel pump as well.
Update: RonJ, i have not done anything with the O2 sensors as of yet. On that note, what will i be looking for when i test? The code is for a slow response, not improper or missing signal. And if possible, could you spell it out as plainly as possible, i am a NOVICE electrical diagnostition.
Anywhoooo, i pulled the main relay, and per instructions, connected terminals 3 and 8 direct to the battery for power to relay, then checked for connectivity bw terminals 5 and 7 for the fuel pump. There was an audible click, as power was fed, but when i did the same with a new relay, the click was much louder. Swapped the relay and was able to get ALL the way home this time b4 the car died again, so i think i may have found the issue. any further incidences will be posted, but i wish this the end of these problems. Lol, thanx for all who provided advice!
