98 Civic with CEL code P1381 - CMP Sensor A Intermittent Interruption
Greets all!
I am having some rather severe trouble with my '98 Honda Civic LX. It started knocking last weekend and then on Monday it started dying at idle while traveling 70 mph. It threw the following codes:
P1381 Honda - CMP Sensor A Intermittent Interruption
P0171 Generic - System Too Lean (Bank 1)
And now, the motor won't hardly turn over when trying to start. I know practically nothing about cars, except a few basics (change headlights, oil, put water in radiator, wiper reservoir...). I basically CANNOT find a replacement Camshaft Position Sensor for anything before a 2001 Civic. I checked eBay, Amazon, even shady car parts websites that turned up on Google. Called O'Reilly's, they said something about a solenoid and that I could forget it. My dad says the CMP Sensor is INSIDE the distributor (passenger side of the engine block). Everything I'VE found says it's on the DRIVER side of the engine block, under the timing belt cover.
Could anybody please shed some light on this? Where is this sensor ACTUALLY located on a 98 Civic LX and where can I get a replacement sensor??? (This post is basically an act of desperation...)
I'll try to post a picture of the motor later; the car is in another city a few minutes up the road at the moment...

Okay, I'll try to start there.
Could you please explain to me what the difference is between CYP, CKP, and CMP? Other people seem to use these interchangeably but from what I can tell they're not the same thing.

I don't have a Code Reader; I had to use a friends and he did not loan it to me. Tonight is the earliest I will be able to check anything, but, the car did code again after we cleared it; whether or not it is the same code, I have not had an opportunity to check yet. I will try to test the circuit you mentioned and re-read the code(s) tonight.
