Fuel saving cost McLaren-Honda 50 seconds in Russian Grand Prix - F1 - Autosport

I suppose McHonda had to do fuel saving in qualifying too. Explains why they haven't been in Q3 since 2014.
Fernando Alonso finished sixth, one lap down, but was 52.829 seconds behind fourth-placed Valtteri Bottas at Sochi.
Boullier says that gap was entirely down to the Honda engine's fuel appetite compared to rival power units.
"We can see that we are the team that have a lot of fuel saving for obvious reasons," said Boullier.
"But with Fernando you could see towards the end of the race he was more than 1.2s faster [per lap].
"So without fuel saving we'd save another 50s which we would've had at the end of the race.
"If you look, we are with Williams [without fuel-saving] so it's the kind of progress we need to go [further].
"But that the pace was good and the drivers were happy with the car balance.
"Fernando had some fun."

This isn't the first time McLaren has had qualifying problems.
Analysis: Qualifying a Burden for McLaren - F1 - Autosport
Interesting to see if history repeats itself.
McLaren boss Ron Dennis knows only too well where his current problems lie - and makes no secret of the fact that if the team can get on top of this tyre heat issue then they may unlock the key to being able to take the fight to Renault.
"We go racing to win and the very reason we are strong in the second part of the race, is exactly the same reason why we are struggling a bit in qualifying," said Dennis.
"We just don't aggressively push into the tyres and that means that in qualifying we don't get enough energy into the tyres and that makes us struggle a bit. But these things are understood and we'll change the car. We've got a very extensive program, which I hope we can now accelerate into Imola, which is our target."
Although Dennis will not talk specifically about what the team are changing on the car, he has confirmed that he is not concerned about the aerodynamic potential of the MP4-20.
"I think the aerodynamics in the car are exceptional but there's several things in the car that are very good. And if Pedro can set the fastest lap you see the strength of the car at the end of the race and there's quite a few things that work.

Cliffs: Rosberg WDC 2016
Boullier needs to shut his pie hole and just say they lost 50 seconds because the car sucks instead of excusifying with talk about fuel savings. Unless there's an MPG championship I don't know about.

well, i interpret it to mean that the honda motor needs to use more fuel to create acceptable levels of power. which means that the motor isn't as efficient as it needs to be.
That's how I took it. The top teams are able to be fast and efficient, while McHonda has to choose one or the other.
Even if McHonda has to put in some extra fuel for qualifying it can't be so much that the extra fuel weight is preventing them from making Q3.
As stated previously they are either having problems with the tyres (too much or not enough temp) or they need to improve the chassis aero.
While I agree with that to a point, that doesn't explain their lack of qualifying pace. I don't buy the 50 seconds due to fuel saving bullshit. You think the other teams aren't saving fuel at points of the race too?

There has always been some aspect of fuel saving. Even in the refueling days. That said it has gotten a lot worse. Most teams don't even put in the full 100 kg at most races because it's faster to be a little slower with less weight on these tyres.
To limit fuel saving FIA would need to mandate a minimum fuel weight and make it moar than 100 kg

So, basically Ron needs to get the king of Cold Tyres, Juan Pablo, on a treadmill and back into F1.

In 1923 Fiat built a new factory in Turin with a race track... on the roof.

I don't think it's a Fiat factory anymore, but the track is still there - and several parking lots nearby show tire marks that would seem to indicate some serious hooning is still going on.

I was glad that Massa lost the championship at the time because I thought Hams deserved it more.
Now that HAM won 2 more though, I kinda wish Massa had won back in 08. Oh well.
