INDYCAR: From-the-back challenge 'why I keep racing' - Montoya

Juan Pablo Montoya said his charge through from the back of the IndyCar field to fifth at Barber on Sunday represented why he loves racing in the series.
The ex-Formula 1 and NASCAR racer lined up last on the grid after struggling with the softer red-marked Firestone tires in qualifying, but he recovered with a fast car in race trim to bag a top five finish.
"That one was fun," said Montoya. "Everything was fun in its own way.
"It was one of those good days on the racetrack – that's why I do it. This is why I love IndyCar racing and why I keep doing it. I had a lot of fun.
"I passed a lot of people – we had tons of passing and a lot of aggression. I love that."
While Montoya accepted that he knew he had a good car for the race, he did not expect to make so much progress.
"If you had told me I would have finished fifth today I would have said you are smoking something funny," he added. "We knew the car was good – we had a good car all weekend but in qualifying it just didn't come in with the red tires.
"Overall it was good, and it was fun managing the tires and the whole situation."
Race winner Simon Pagenaud, one of Montoya's Penske teammates, was shocked to see how much progress the 40-year-old made.
"It's so amazing – how did he do that?" said Pagenaud. "I guess he was hungry. I have to watch the race to understand the strategy, but great job."
Meanwhile, runner-up Grahal Rahal believes IndyCar can learn from the Barber race to make other events more interesting.
"He's driving a Penske – that makes life a little easier," joked Rahal when asked about Montoya's charge. "Honestly, when you have a race for this sort of distance, it opens up the strategies a bit. We need to look at what this is as far as a distance – it's plug and play pretty much anywhere else.
"This is what we need to change for Long Beach – if you can go long, go short, but still have the tires underneath you, you'll make up track position quick."

Hamilton to re-use China qualifying engine
Lewis Hamilton will be able to re-use the power unit that failed in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, his Mercedes team has confirmed.
The world champion was relegated to the back of the grid at Shanghai after he suffered an MGU-H problem in the first qualifying session.
After that issue, the team elected to replace the power unit for the race while investigation of the broken engine took place back at the team's factory last week.
That work has now concluded that there was not significant damage and the power unit – the first of the five he is allowed to run this year – will now become a spare.
A statement from Mercedes said: "The power unit in question arrived back at Brixworth in the early hours of Thursday morning of the week following the race and investigation into the failure has been on-going every minute since its return to the factory.
"The MGU-H has been stripped and the issue is suspected to be associated with the insulation. The turbocharger will be replaced in addition to the oil pumps, after debris was found in the oil system.
"With the repairs completed, this power unit will remain in the driver pool and travel to Sochi as a spare."

Something is in my ceiling. I've been trying to hunt it down for the last 3 hours. Getting annoyed. If I didn't want to have to fix holes in the ceiling I would just start shooting at it. Yes I know how incredibly redneck that sounds but after 3 hours in a hot, dusty, cramped attic I'm losing my mind.
I have placed a baited trap (live release trap) and will hope for the best. It doesn't sound large but all I can think of is...
I have placed a baited trap (live release trap) and will hope for the best. It doesn't sound large but all I can think of is...

The biggest problem I have is making sure everyone else did their job and isn't giving me garbage data or a design that is riddled with issues.
Because I'm not sure what I'm dealing with I figured the live trap may actually have a better chance of working.
Honda designing ?new concept? F1 engine for 2017
The new concept is to not be the worst engine on the grid...
So turbo out of the V, supposedly. At the front or the back of the V is the question...
The new concept is to not be the worst engine on the grid...
Honda is working on an all-new engine concept for 2017.
That is the claim of Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, despite the fact McLaren’s engine partner has made clear progress this year after the nightmare start of the works collaboration in 2015.
“The car feels good and we’re definitely heading in the right direction, but we need to keep pushing and working hard to bring more improvements and power for us to see further progression,” said British driver Jenson Button.
Indeed, although McLaren-Honda is no longer a backmarker, the long straight in Shanghai showed that in engine power alone, the team is more than 10kph down on the field-leaders Mercedes and Ferrari.
Auto Motor und Sport says more power is coming in Canada in June, reportedly by Honda replicating an innovative spark ignition trick pioneered by Mercedes.
But correspondent Michael Schmidt says Honda now acknowledges its fundamental mistake in having placed the turbo unit within the ‘V’ of the six-cylinder internal combustion engine.
“The bitter pill is that the new engine will only be ready for 2017,” he said.

Most of our dynamic system analysis is done through FEA at this point (and we have a separate group that does that full time). Also do some through excel macros based on historic designs and some assumptions.

Russian billionaire new owner of Nurburgring
From the Green Hell to the Red Hell?
I would assume this means the Ring is saved.
From the Green Hell to the Red Hell?
A Russian billionaire is now the full owner of the fabled Formula 1 circuit the Nurburgring.
In late 2014, we reported that Viktor Kharitonin, who co-founded the pharmaceutical company Pharmstandard, had bought into the embattled German grand prix venue.
Forbes Russia now reports that Kharitonin, 43, has upped his stake from 80 to 99 per cent.
“Today we have closed the deal,” he is quoted as saying, with Forbes claiming the value of the new transaction is some EUR 38 million.
It is believed Kharitonin has paid EUR 77 million in total for the circuit, with the minority shareholder GetSpeed keeping a symbolic 1 per cent.
Amid the Nurburgring’s well-documented financial and ownership troubles, Germany fell off the F1 calendar last year and is once again back in doubt for 2017.
F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said he came close to buying the Nurburgring, but the then owners opted for another offer “for the sake of one or two million”.
“I think we can say for sure that there will not be a race” in 2017, he told motorsport-magazin.com late last year.
Explaining the 2015 absence now, Kharitonin said: “We ourselves refused because they did not agree with the organisers on financial matters.”
Kharitonin, however, claims talks with Ecclestone will resume, according to Forbes Russia

Russian Grand Prix – GP2 racer Sergey Sirotkin will drive the opening FP1 session of the Russian GP weekend, taking Kevin Magnussen’s place for the morning. Sirotkin, a Russian native, has been signed by Renault as a test driver on a “long term development plan”.
His first duties will see him step into Kevin Magnussen’s RS.16 for FP1 at his home Grand Prix, his second time to do so after driving the same session for Sauber in 2014.
