I drive a 2000 Civic SiR (B16A2), its pretty much stock except for a CAI and lowering springs. This is my only car, daily driver, and will be buying a set of coils for it in the spring. My budget for the coils is around $850. At first I was interested in the Skunk2 PRO S II's but heard they are quite stiff and might be bad for daily driving. I then started to research the Function & Form Type 1's because they seem to be the same as the Skunk2's but with a softer spring.

What I'm trying to figure out is how much of a difference is there in ride comfort and is there a better set of coils out there that I'm unaware of.

Not sure if I read this wrong but I think I read that the Skunk2's spring rate can be set, by changing the preload, anywhere from 8-18kg/mm. And the Function & Form's start at 10 in the front and 6 in the rear.

I plan on getting my car on the track within the next 2 years and its a possibility that I will start to track it quite often after that. But for now its just a daily driver.

Please any advice or information is welcome, this is my first post on Honda-Tech and I tried to give as much info as I could, thanks. Oh and ask me any questions.

Skunk2's are very stiff. I personally like tien, they have different sets for stiff race or for soft comfort.

 

I've got a set of the Progress competition coilovers on my 98 coupe. They are very good. I have the 350/350 set.

 

You are buying it for racing or just driving though? because you said that you will be tracking it someday so you want to buy a suspension now

 

no im buying coils now because i hate my current suspension (stock struts and lowering springs) and i want an upgrade. When I talked to a guy who works at a local JDM Shop in my area he said the Skunk2's and the Function&Forms are both good coils he just said the Skunk2's are stiffer. I want something that will be good for daily driving but am willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort for performance.

 

Save your money for AMR Engineering if you want something that will meet your needs. They are custom valved to your needs and Andy the owner will discuss with you those needs. I have a set... Not installed but they are beautifully made.

Suspension is not cheap bud. All "good" coilovers are gonna be expensive. If you cant afford that, than coilovers are not for you.

Indeed, your gonna drop at least 700 for an alright set. Even more if you want better.

 

I have function and form type 1 on my 2000 civic si. Personally, I love them. Handle is good, ride is very nice.

How much did you change them from factory (ride height and preload) ?

 

I actually purchased the si with them on. Only thing I have done was lowered the car down more. I am parking the car now for winter, switching up wheels for next summer. I will most likely raise it up a bit. I've had several friends drive the car and they were very surprised to find out that it had coilovers.

Bad companies:
Function&Form - They have made strides, but they appeal to the kiddies who want to slam their cars and don't care about much else. I've seen numerous posts over the years about leaking shocks being shipped to them, or leaking immediately afterwards. 1 year warranty.

I've seen way too many posts about leaking shocks, blown shocks, etc over the last few years with regard to Function/Form.

I've NEVER seen a single post on clubcivic, honda-tech, or nwp4life about Progress having any problems. Several people have posted saying they've been driving on an old Gen1 set of progress coilovers since 1996 and they are still being autocrossed to this day having been on 3 different cars.

Ditto that story for Koni/GC, several members who have beaten/raced/slammed koni and ground control for 10+ years and are still satisfied.

Sorry dude, experiment with your own money if you like, I'm still going to recommend what is tried and true.

 

I'm 30 years old.. Far from a teenie bopper. I've had many suspensions on other civics, and this one setup I like. He asked for opinions, I gave him one hoping it would help. Sorry it's not what you would use.
