Out the bottom is the only way. Just make sure you have 2 jacks available. Leave the drivers side engine mount attached. You may need to remove the crossmember.

You are really going to say that? I did not pull that suggestion out of my ***. The Helms manual is essentially identical to what a Honda technician uses and has every little detail in troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, etc including pictures.

http://www.helminc.com/helm/product2...400&itemtype=N

An average of 1,500 pages of detailed repair instruction and diagrams written by Honda service professionals make this the best manual available for accurate repair. Each Section includes a Table of Contents, and many have a Component Location Index showing parts disassembly sequence, bolt torques, thread sizes, and page references to descriptions in text. Book includes Maintenance Schedules, Specifications, Troubleshooting, Special Tools, Removal/Installation, Disassembly and Adjustment. Repair instruction on Engine Electrical, Engine, Cooling, Fuel and Emissions, Transaxle, Steering, Suspension, Brakes including ABS, Body, Heating/Air Conditioning/Ventilation, Body Electrical and Restraints.
Description:
Instructions And Procedures For Routine Repair Adjustment Maintenance Work Diagnosis/Testing And Removal/Installation Of Parts For Various Vehicle Systems.

The only way you can remove the transmission from the top is with the engine attached.

HEY. I took my trans out today at work. Replacing it with a junkyard POS. No choice. Car won't move!

Hint. Let the engine rest on the forward facing brace under the engine. The engine drops about an inch. Nice design by Honda. Remove the passenger radius rod. No choice. Must do. Otherwise, straight forward transmission removal.

No. I'm talking about the brace that runs paralell with the exuaust system. The black rolled sheet metal brace that runs front to back under the oil pan.

And, I'm talking about the radius rod. The thick piece of metal rod that goes from the lower control arm on the passenger side to the front of the subframe. It's in the way of the transmission and is easy to identify. Take those out and you're good to go.

Also, note that the rear engine mount bracket does not need to be unbolted from the engine. It looks like it attaches to the trans but doesn't. Also, the front engine mount bracket doesn't need to be removed as it only attaches to the engine.

I had my trans replaced in about 5 hours total.

Also, the rear engine mount bracket only needs to be unbolted from the transmission. It looks like it will be in the way but it won't.

If you are dropping the transmission only, then from the bottom is the only way to go. Removing the p/s radius bar will give you some room. You will have to use a jack to support the engine as it will be necessary to loosen engine maounts especially removing the front mount to allow the engine to drop down low enough to get the trans out.

TIP: use two layers of cardboard to ease sliding it out from under the car. Sometimes if your car has an extra lip on it, you may need to remove that.

Unless you want to pull the whole thing engine and tranny out the top with a cherry picker, which can sometimes be easier especially when trying to mate them back together to reinstall.
