Well a year ago, on the FIRST rainy day of the year I hit a HUGE water puddle and my CAI sucked up a bunch of water. Car sputtered and died instantly. A piston shot out of the block and the starter blew out of the mounts and off of the block as well. What I'm wondering is if the head is still usable? Maybe if I dry it out? It's been sitting there for a year now everything still in place: Oil Pan, Block with a huge hole in it and the head. I figured I might as well rebuild the head if its still usable. This is a D16Z6 by the way. Thanks

 

take the head off and look for visible damage..if it looks fine, check for bent valves...

 

Its possible head is still good, just going to have to be checked out.

 

If water got into one cylinder there's a pretty good chance that it got into others. There's a pretty good chance that the head will be badly corroded and the valves are badly rusted if water has been sitting in a cylinder for a year. Only way to know is to pull the head and check.

Situational questions are best answered by self diagnosis and testing/checking. Asking if a DSM manifold will fit on an H22 has a cut and dry 'yes' or 'no' answer whereas your situation requires investigation and action steps to find the answer because it's a unique situation to everyone else, or mostly everyone else.

Alright I'll take the head out, dust it off and take a look at it. I'm don't hold high knowledge of motor let alone its internals so I wouldn't know what really to look for. Rust and anything that looks out of place or misshapen = bad then. Thanks for all the feedback. Appreciate it

Case in point. Dont drive lowered Honda/Acura into any "thought it was shallow" puddle.

 

oh you'll be able to tell if the head is damaged. this is a damaged gsr head



if it has scarring like that, get a new head. they're pretty cheap. if it looks clean, just take it to a shop and have them check for bent valves. you may have have gotten lucky and that piston was on its way down when the rod/crank came apart, if it was going up...it probably caused some good damage.

 

one of the biggest concerns would be if the head was fractured or cracked due to pressure from trying to compress water. if the rod and piston gave way before pressure was high enough to damage the head then you may be lucky. most likely rust and corrosion will be present but that is superficial.
i would remove the head and see if their is any "obvious" damage if not then dont assume its good just yet. take it to a qualified machine shop and have them check it out.
or dump that motor and drop in something better, ls motors are cheap and plentiful. h22 cost a lot to install but are reasonably priced. ab16 is a favored option as well...

speedooo is totaly correct, In my friends case his head only sustained minor damage and was able to be fixed.

I have seen heads that look like that pic posted before.

Sometimes you get lucky.
