Bleeding the cooling system may take 20-30 minutes.

1) Park the car on an inclined driveway with the front end higher than the rear.

2) Push the dash heater lever/**** to MAX heat.

3) Follow the directions in the diagram below (hint: the bleed bolt is located where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine):

-----------------------------
So the two heater hoses are disconnected from the firewall and the ends of the hoses are plugged, right? And when you reconnect the hoses to the firewall, the engine overheats, right?

If so, after reconnecting the hoses, did you top off the radiator and reservoir with coolant and then bleed the cooling system of trapped air?

Be careful with that radiator cap. Make sure when you open it that the coolant is cold enough not to scald you.

If you can't wait for it to cool down, open it very very slowly, until all the pressure escapes. Wear some heavy duty gloves.

if you bought the car that way, the heater core is probably leaking.

I've never tried this. If you do it this way, does any coolant spill out the radiator?

I agree. What reason would someone have to bypass the heater core otherwise? There's an inline valve controlled by your hot-cold climate control inside the car that bypasses it quite well.

If you wait maybe 1 or 2 minutes, it's usually cool enough that very little or no coolant comes out. In my experience just hot air escapes.
