i am converting my steering into manual.
the car is a 96 civic. (came with poewr steering.)
i got the manual steering rack and pinion from a donor car and was wondering is that all i need to convert it?
i heard i also have to change the sub-frame/cross member also?
is that true? can someone confirm it?
i know for EGs you have to change the subframe/ cross member.
any help gladly appreciated! *thumbs up*

I converted the power to manual, using the power rack. Quicker ratio and Energy Suspension Poly Bushings.
I did a write-up on this. Just search.
As far as the swap goes, I'm not sure. If the mounting bolts are the same then you should not have to swap sub-frames. I would cross reference the part numbers on the tie rods to confirm they are the same. Other than that, I don't think there is much else.

cool. your write up is about the 92-95 civics. i have a 96 EK and i have a manual steering rack and pinion. it have none of those power steering lines.
the thing i am wondering is if the manual steering rack and pinion would fit a power steering subframe/cross member.
or vice versa.
i was told that i have to change the subframe/ cross member in order for the manual steering rack to to work.

hmmm.
Not sure.
I would cross reference the crossmember part numbers. Try here:

Someone with more Ek experience might chime in.

i cross reference my 96 civic cross member, and steering joints, and they are both the same part numbers.
when i asked the 'master mechanics' at the salvage yard i picked up my manual steering rack from, they say the part numbers dont matter, they can still be different.

And what would you need to convert TO power steering? because my friend really wants to do it on his EK hatch after driving my EX Coupe.

I converted from power steering to manual in my 99 Si. I pulled out the entire power steering system and swapped in a manual rack from a CX. The only other part that you will need to get, if I recall, is the "u-joint" that connects the yolk from the steering column to the yolk on the rack. The "yolk" (the cylindrical part that has serrations) is different on the manual rack as opposed to a power one. I believe it is a smaller diameter on the manual. I had to go to the dealer and went through 3 of them before I got the right piece.
And yes, on my car (which is probably the same as all other 96-00 Civic in this regard) the K-frame and all other bolts were fully compatible with the manual rack.

cool! thanks! gladly appreciated! i just did mines just today, and it fits perfect, and when i match up the power and the non-power. they both have the same diameter, and mounting linings are all perfect.
steering is no problem, but for some reason now, my steering feels kinda loose the first 20 degrees going left and right. any suggestion to that?

Have you done an alignment yet?
Anyway, I did the same thing in my 96 Civic EX when I blew up the power rack. Have you completely bolted down the steering column/rack linkage tightly? It could simply have play there in between teeth. Also, are your outer tie rods replaced and greased now?
It could just be the way a manual rack feels in general. I'd check mine but it's incapacitated. :-)

but in your case, you have manual steering. all you need is to get a power steering rack and pinion, power steering regulator, and the lines and that canister thing where you put fluid, and also the power steering belt. but DONT DO IT!
but for EGs... you will HAVE to change apart its cross member/ subframe in order for it to fit correctly.
i just did an alignment today, my steering wheel does not feel much of losse steering from each turn 20 degrees off no more. it feels more of 10 degrees off though, but when i asked the mechanic that did my alignment. he said 10 degrees is fine for free play because for manual, it needs its movement when you steer at its post of where you need to be like for instance; parallel park. but other than that. my steering is super firm and its a bitshhh to turn, but i feel wayyy more power to the motor and yet i get a workout. LOL.
for EKs... you ONLY need to get a manual steering rack/ rack and pinion and of course, like what NSXspoon says, you will need that u-joint and yolk to fit it in within the steering column and the pinion. and it directly bolts onto your subframe/ cross member without no problem.

anyone knows how to make the manual rack less "loose"? It feels like the steering has too much slack while the car is moving.. sorry didnt mean to jack thread.
