My car must just be odd, it liked the AEM with the Spec Cs more than it did a short intake system. Almost 4 whp difference at the time...
As for the cold air only at idle, please explain...

You could safe yourself $50 if you get the Moster filter instead of the Spoon. They are the same thing, unless you are telling me that Yellow color filter flow better than Red color filter.

hm... Spoon Intake, eh?
any Dyno Sheet to Prove?
(solly, I somehow can't see an Intake really add that much HP on our R, after the Dyno day that I went a couple months ago)

Because when you are moving there is plenty of air moving in the engine bay
which keeps the temperature down. when you stop the air in the engine bay
heats up.

On my own car my intake made about 2-5whp more than an aem except at 4400.
and it doesnt rev as well with the aem as with mine.

Take it with a grain of salt, get whatever looks good or feels good to you.

Oh, and I havent tried a generic short ram because Im cheap, and what aint btoke
aint gonna get fixed. besides, the taper of the stock tube is more gradual than
those short rams.

Matter a fact I did dyno it at the Socal meet in Jan 2002. My car did 179.6 whp. But I also had the Spoon N1. So I believe having the Spoon intake helped alot because there is no way that a exhaust can make that much of a difference because the stock one pretty good to begin with.

I would agree that a moving car would most likely have cooler air in the engine bay than a car standing still, but I would think air outside the engine bay would still be colder. I have nothing to prove this. Just feel your hood even after driving the car around. Not trying to flame, just my $.02.

For the cold air intakes, having used both the AEM and the Injen, the Injen is a much better piece. It fits much better. Austin had done a Dyno test between the Comptech, the AEM, and the Injen (the AEM and Injen were both mine) and they all were fairly close with only a couple of HP difference between them. The Injen did the best too, but once again it was just by a couple of HP and was probably even within the margin of error.

as a "drop in" i plan to get the RU-2820 and modify my stock filter, it will fit better because the E-2427 will not have the rubber seal.

AEM cold air w/ monsterflow race filter. Gains are really good, sounds great, better than "stock" AEM cold air.

and a longer intake tract also increases low end power while taking away
from high rpm. also throttle response is not as good.

Cold air is only useful at idle sitting still.
I totally agree with this. I noticed this two years ago with my SOHC 1.6 and have continued to prove it to myself since. All you need is Stock Box Upgraded filter. Aftermarket filters allow ~ 200-300% more air flow. After that it's worth asking yourself what is an intake doing above and beyond that?

One word "Spoon" Best $150 I ever spent on the car.
I love my spoon filter. Does basically the same thing as a K&N, only differences - Foam, $100

Do not take the top of the box off, unless you care more about the sound than performance, it is noticeably slower.

I know that...I guess that didn't come across the way I wanted it to. I was "admitting" to liking the sound more than the 1HP I get from cold air...

comptech drop in filter. $70. i ran faster in the 1/4 with the stock intake vs a aem or short ram style intake.

AEM or nothing. Just my opinion. I have ran them on both my Type-R's and have had great reults (times and dyno runs).

I wouldn't recomend the bypass valve I have heard that the foam they put around it will get sucked into an intake port.
Yeah I did not install the bypass valve on my intake either. One really does not need it unless there is massive flooding.. I don't know if my mechanic was right when he said this, but the bypass valve is somewhat like a backup filter in that, the K&N has to be fully soaked thru with water, and only then will the engine be in jeopardy.

Hey, that's exactly what I'm thinking of doing! I recently cleaned my filter (owned my R for about a month). I don't think the guy that owned it before me ever cleaned it (had about 20,000 miles on it already when I bought it) and the filter was ABSOLUTELY filthy. I figured that if I don't like the CAI modified into a short ram, then you could always take a piece of 3" silicone hose, 2 hose clamps, and make it a full length CAI again. What engine characteristics did you notice change when you modified the CAI? Throttle response changes? Sound level changes? Maybe even some performance gain?
