Default Silly question about upper control arm replacement

As I am evaluating the front end on the civic, it looks like one of the UCA ball joints could use replacing.
Looking on majectic's site, looks like Honda doesn't sell just the UCA ball joint, but the whole UCA assembly.
What do you guys use? Does someone make just the ball joint, and can it be pressed in/out?
Or do you have a reasonably priced source for entire assemblies?

thanks

Just replace the whole upper arm (don't think there is another legal IT option but there very well may be??) - if you want, I'll give you two of them if you pick up a D15 motor and take it away from here You might want to give Beaver's Honda Salvage (Kannapolis, NC - don't have the number offhand, check white pages.com) as they can probably have one shipped to you in the very near term.

thanks Adam, but my wife really doesn't need another greasy coffee table in the living room
Isn't it risky to get used UCA from a junkyard?

Actually, I've noticed that Ingalls sells ball joints by themselves:

http://www.ingallseng.com/misc_parts/84205.htm

Would these work with Honda UCAs, or are they replacements for Ingalls Aftermarket UCAs?

if youre talking about EF civics, the later and newly bought control arms have replaceable balljoints. the older ones were welded on. but i still dont think you can buy just the balljoint from honda, but im sure someone will sell an aftermarket one that will work. so you could call around.

i dunno if you already replaced the bushings, but the new arms also come with new bushings anyway, so its not just the balljoint and extra stamped arm youre paying for.

I'm replacing mine as well and I just got this e-mail from majestic today:

"The arm for both years have the same Honda part number. Although the ball joint may be removeable, Honda doesn't sell it as separately sold item. Please let
us know if there is anything else we can do."

I believe "both years" refers to '88 and '91 which I specifically mentioned in my e-mail to them. Does anyone know the exact years that have the removable ball joints?

Has anyone found a source for replacement upper balljoints for the 94-01 integras? I'd like to replace mine in the off season, but new $100/side upper arms dont shizzle my nizzle.

https://mfr.activant.com/mfrserv/extsrv - moog sells a replacement arm w/ ball joint... found them at https://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/prt,11,K90448 for $66/each.

I'd still like the $30 variety that the lower balljoints are though...

K90469 is the part number for just the upper control arm ball joint from moog.

You figure that with new bushings at about $8ea, plus $29 for the upper ball joint, thats about $45 for just 2 bushigns and a balljoint, per side. The $66 doesn't sound too bad imo for a whole new arm.

Not to mention the fact you'd have to get the old ball joints and bushings pressed out and the new ones pressed in, makes the extra expense seem negligible.

Buy the whole front end ball joint kit off ebay and be done with it. They are of good quality and I use them on my street and race car.

I am in the same predicament, but I have to do the Lower Ball Joints (I decided to play black smith and pounded the crap out of my LBJ threads with my hammer ) and the outer tie rods.

What do yall think of the following choices:
LBJ:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...photo
Outer Tie Rod:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...photo

And for the complete package

Opinions??

just grab the complete package if you can....it is a great deal and if you don't need everything now, then you can just stash it away as spares.

I think I'm going to order some of those Ebay LBJs as well...

Are you guys just using a BFH to replace them?

on lower ball joints, yes. BFH

I imagine I could build a jig for my press, but as of now it is really awkward to try and press the LBJ in and out.

On the lowers, I found a large vice to work rather well.

Well, I am too poor to get the package so I got the outer tie rod ends and the set of ball joints.

Care to elaborate?? I will have to be replacing my (lower) ball joints when they get here.

I seem to remember that this is how I took mine out too. I started out on the press but is was a real pain to line up so I tried the pound it out technique. Worked fine. Going back in I used a socket or piece of pipe to make room for the stud on the ball joint and whatever spacer was needed to push in the joint. No big deal if you remember to clean everything prior to putting it back together. I would suggest a bit of never sieze where it goes in the upright to make later (re)replacement easier.
