shoe ?
Flame-resistent shoes. There are millions of brands but they are all basically the same type of deal.
If you are racing then yes, you are required to use certain kinds of shoes.
EDIT: I am not referring to autocrossing as "racing" in the context of the above sentence.

I have a pair of MOMO shoes, I got a good deal in them.
3 things to remeber
1) make sure you buy them new and current...some are NOT approved for racing
2) Try them on or make sure you can return them...sizes vary a lot from brand to brand
3) you get what you pay for...mine have lasted 3 seasons with little damage, other less$$$ shoes last a year or so.

If you are autocrossing, a pair of wrestling shoes costs less than Nomex driving shoes.
If you are going on track, either for racing or lapping, a pair of Nomex driving shoes is a good idea. Prices range from $75-$200.
Leather is not a good idea - it shrinks when heated. If you do wear leather shoes, make sure they are laced. A shrunken boot would be mighty uncomfortable.

a pair of sneakers are fine if the rules arent strict on flame retardant. the only problem with my walking shoes is the sole sticks out wide and sometimes catches under the edge of my brake pedal. otherwise, driving shoes arent really an issue i think.

For some reason race shoes have caught on as a fashion statement.
I can get race shoes at almost any shoe store here in NYC. I'm just waiting for the end of the season for all the stores to let these go for half price.
Have my eye on the puma/sparco.
Bonus I can try them on before buying.
