Default seat bracket material?

i need to weld up a mounting bracket to mount a seat to. im doint the usual "connect one side to rocker area/door sill and the other side to the exhaust tunnel." my question is what material should i use? obviously not aluminum, but anything in particular?

Spence:

Simple and cheap from the hardware aisle at Home Depot. They have steel channel. I think I used 1 1/2 x 1/2 in the Prepared car. It's in a bin with all the threaded rod.

Use your factory tracks bolted to two pieces of the channel, then bolt the seat to the channels. A racing seat should be narrow enough to be inboard of the track mounting points. I used the original seat track bolts for the floor pan attachment, going into the original stock seat attachment, and grade 8 for the bolts into the seat.

This way the seat attaches to the floorpan at the stock reinforced locations, and no welding required, just a couple of hacksaw rips and drilling.

Did you do a search? I thought we covered this about 4 month ago.

Check out this thread to see how we did it in a Miata-r.

Spence,

Depending on the mounting points of your seat, you may find it ends up further back. I know my OMP mounted this way on the stock track ia about 2" further rearward in the same range of travel. It will go back far enough that I can't reach the pedals.

yea, im 78" tall. so i need more leg room more than anything. the head room isnt a problem actually, but i could use a few more inches just to get my head away from the roof.

my friend imports rails from japan that let the seat move farther back. i dont think the seat sits any lower tho. they move far enough back that i can fit (almost) in his s13 240sx. but he has a bucket, so i need alittle more room. but to get lower, i cant think of anything else to do but make new mounting points to attach everything to the car.

I'm debating a re-mount of my Sparco seat, the inability to rotate my leg for proper rev-matching when the brake pedal goes pretty deep at the track is starting to suck hard.

I've got the sparco basemount and sparco siderails on my Evo. I think i'd like to go an inch or so back and lower an inch or maybe even two (i'm pretty tall)...everyone please post pix of your seat mounting so ideas can float around. Here's mine, fairly straightforward, no adjustability at all:

i swear that sparco base is the biggest piece of **** made. see how tall it is in the back? ridiculous. the stock rear setup is offset, the vertical tab being taller than the horizontal tab. with the sparco they are even. way to tall. sorry, i will stop bitching...

there is. here are a few i have done

all you need is a mig and strap steel. my brackets weigh double what the sparco does, but as you can see, they are worlds apart....
