IRL practice wreck
Not a good way for a new season to start.
Paul Dana is listed in critical condition.
Ed Carpenter is listed as awake and alert.

My first reaction was to blame Carpenter. Is he in the IRL on merit or as Tony George's stepson? But after the initial shock I know it's not fair to blame Carpenter. Things happen in racing and it's unfortunate that this happened.
Man, this just sucks. Would've been cool to see him and Andretti compete for Rookie of the Year. I'm worried about Marco too. I still think he graduated a year or two too soon and that he may have been thrown in the deep end of the pool.
Damn, it's not supposed to be like this.

Agreed. Open wheel formula cars + concrete walls is a recipe for disaster.
F1 is soooo much safer.

In a sense I agree, slow the cars down and move to all road courses except the Indy 500 for its historical significance. These cars are topping 220+ on most circuits, and that is stupid fast in a open wheel car with concrete walls inches away.

Greg Moore and Alex Zanardi weren't racing IRL when their incidents occured they were racing with CART.
Open wheel cars have been part of oval racing for nearly 100 years. I started attending CART races in the 80's at places like Indy, Michigan, Pocono. Saying open wheel cars don't belong on ovals is ignoring a lot of history.
I've never been a big IRL fan (support CART) but I watched today's race and the last 20 laps between Wheldon and Helio was the best damn racing I've watched in quite some time. Wheldon ran side to side with Helio for 18 laps, then draften him the last 5 laps and passed him in the final corner, winning by 14/1000's of a second.
Hopefully IRL and CART will merge and oval racing will be limited to Michigan and Indy.
It's a sad day for racers everywhere but you get out of life what you put in and Dana apparently lived out his dream.

This does a good job of summing it (Paul Dana) up.

It's direct and honest, actually doing a good job of humanizing Dana, without being cynical.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. I almost never watch IRL racing, but caught the last 20 laps or so and it was a great race.
Every single one of us accept the fact that we may die when we go on the track, however, it is still very, very sad for his family and friends.

Robin's got the balz to tell it like it is.
This scenario was played out numerous times at Charlotte when Humpy would have a 'Sportsman series' race in support of the World 600. A short track guy that was driving just over his hood would drive blind and WOT into a crash scene at the exit of T#4 that was several seconds old with tragic results.
Think about the number of local yellows club racers blow on a road course! Every weekend the stewards have to preach about it, and we're usually only going 85mph or less when a yellow is missed.
A tunnel vision rookie going 200mph can easily miss the yellow track lights, or even his dash light.

it was a bit of a mixed wreck. first of all i agree that the speed of those cars are rediculous.
his spotters told him to go low, which from the looks of it he did just that. (i just glanced at the video yesterday).. but carpenters car started to roll to the bottom of the track which was the prob. the spotters called the "go low" when he wrecked on the wall. but i believe he was just trying to use this wreck to go faster, im sure he didnt think it was a practice run.
but being a rookie was probably the biggest fault. how often are you introduced into scenarios like this and trying to jerk the wheel at like 200mph?

I can't agree.
Make me a list of open wheel drivers killed on ovals and I'll make a list of drivers killed on road courses and street circuits. My list might not be as long as yours, but it'd be a pretty sad list.
These cars are dangerous. It doesn't matter where you are racing them. And folks have been racing them on ovals for a lonnnngggggg time.
