Oh boy, you could write a book on this one. My advice is buy what interests you. If you like Miatas, buy one. Want a CRX? Get one. Some cars are more suitable than others, but when you're starting out the driver is way more imporant than the driver. Something small and light will be easier on tires while teach you all about momentum, however.

Before you do any mods, get a rulebook as well as a few events under your belt. The main thing is to get involved. Anyway, here's something we wrote as a primer on the sport: http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com/flysolo.html

Like David was implying- very complex question to ask on this forum-

Suggestion- It's probably easier to get your answers by going to your local autocross and asking this question there. Most of the competitors are really helpful, and you'll be able to see the cars in person, and in action.

Unless you can narrow it down, it's gonna be real hard to help you here.

Good luck.

Excellent choice, provided you can find one that hasn't been run into the ground. The newest ones are 14 years old now.

If this is going to be street driven also then I would check with your insurance company before making a purchase...you'll be real suprised on the price differance between the cars you have listed. Savings of getting a Miata compared to a GS-R may be a new pair of slicks or even wheels. Then you have to look at the maintenance costs, aftermarket availability [& costs], etc. Probably have alot more fun in a RWD too...but don't forget about the FC RX-7 or 240sx.

I know it's not one of your choices, but I would highly recommend a Miata.

All you need is springs, shocks, and sway bars. And it's RWD, which means it turns a little easier. And it barely has enough power to spin. I race a Spec Miata, and I must say, it's the most fun you can have with pants on.

Also take into account your daily driving habits and what the car will be used for if its not a dedicated autocross car.

One option is to try and get rides from local autocrossers (co-driving) to see about different cars and what you like.

Look at the results for one of the Street Touring classes(STS, STU, STS2) and pick a "competitive" car from those lists that you think you will enjoy driving and owning. STS is a competitive class but you can be competitive for not a lot of money. The fastest tires are cheap and long lasting and most mods that you may want to do are both legal and very streetable. I have less than $5000 total in my STS car and finished 2nd of 7 cars in my very first event.

You really dont need any thing into the car except a decent set of street tires to make it a lot of fun to drive.

What car do you have now? You can autocross that car (as long as it's in good mechanical shape). You don't need the stickiest tires or the latest suspension pieces or an engine swap.

I would get a car that has lots of aftermarket support and is designed with performance in mind. A RWD vehicle would be my choice (1st gen MR2, 2nd Gen RX7-if you aren't afraid to mess with rotaries, '91-'93 240SX, mazda miata, and 4th gen Camaro V6 would all be great affordable autocrossers with adequate support). I really thought about getting a StarQuest (Mitsubishi Starion/Chrystler Conquest TSI), but they do require a good deal of upkeep and not much is available for aftermarket support compared to the others. Would make an excellent weekend car and is destined to be a collector sports car...I really would like to get one sometime in the future.

FWD is fun, but so is RWD (even moreso IMO) .... so don't forget checking out the RWD vehicles too!
