Default good tie downs - FOR CHEAP

ordered some of these this morning.

http://www.saferacer.com/tiedownkits.html

got 2 sets in 8' length for $140.

this is a great deal compared to the same units which are sold over at racer wholesale because there is no tax ($10), or shipping ($40). they also don't charge you any more for getting the longer 8' or 10' straps compared to the standard 6'.

for anybody needing some tie downs, i thought this was a pretty dang good deal.

I bought mine from M&R (same hooks as pictured). Granted they do not wrap around-simply clip to the D-rings and chassis points. The set of 4 in 10' lengths came to $100. The incremental pricing difference was $1/foot or so. I assume you have a need for this particular model. Just make sure they are rated for 10,000.

i guess i'm not quite understanding your setup.

is yours 1 big strap with hooks at each end? if so, how do you tighten it to the appropriate length?

i'm always interested in how to do the same job cheaper.

I prefer to attach to the chassis since by attaching to the axles or suspension, you could easily bend things once you tighten the straps.

The other suggestion would be to use straps that go over the tops of the tires like on a tow dolly.

I think he is asking if you realize that the ones pictured seemed to be made specifically for looping around an item on the car, as opposed to using a tow hook of some sort.

i'm not sure if that was addressed to me or not.........

but yes, i do realize that, in fact, that's what i wanted. i typically go through the spokes on the wheels when tying down. not so that the pressure is on the spoke itself, but on the outer rim. sure if i'm in an accident it might bend the wheel, but show me something on the car that won't bend/break if you're in a big wreck.

The only problem I have had with fixed-length loops is that I never put the car in exactly the same spot on the trailer. I recently switched to ratchet straps (with the same forged/twisted clip) on all four corners and it's making life much easier.

The M&R units come with a ratchet assembly. We use the 4 tie-down points on the CRX and Prelude. Depending on the trailer, you may find that the long webbing is too long for the ratchet-as I did. One other thing-do buy a safety one to connect the front center hook (if you have one) or something similar so that the mains are protected. I had M&R make me a "Y" shaped piece to connect to the hooks on the CRX and to the winch. Hope that helps.

One thing to look out for if you are going to run tie-down straps through the wheels is frayed straps that turn into broken straps. This can and will happen. I've seen a couple of straps that failed because of this and the car came loose on the trailer as a result. The people were all upset with the company they bought them from when they themselves were responsible for what happened. Better to buy tire bonnets than use this solution.
