Default A good spring...

Can anyone reccommend a good spring to use with Tokico Illuminas for road race? I currently use Neuspeed Race springs (progressive rates) and am not sure if I like them or not. Just curious to see what other 2nd gen CRX guys use and what works best.

Thanks a lot.

I don't think the Tokico's like anything more than 400 lb springs (bouncy as hell and harsh). I was using 500lb linear springs with my old Tokico's, and they seemed ok at the track, but it's not ideal. I think (and could be wrong) that most CRX IT guys on Tokico's are using under 500 lb springs. Anything more than that, and you're going to want revalved Koni's.

Is it true that the Yellows can take up to 500 lb off the shelf?

Most CRX's in IT run a minimum of 400# front and 600# rear springs. I can't recall having ever talked to a CRX driver running less than that. I'm not familiar with the Illuminas but that might be too much spring for them.

We've always run Eibach springs. We started with Koni race valved shocks and now use Penske. I've found that I like the car sprung fairly stiff.

Supposed to be able to take around 600#. I am running 550# in the rear right now on off the shelf yellows. I have not run the car yet, so I have no data on how the Konis are liking the springs.

As fas as "off the shelf" progressive spring kits like Nuespeed/H&R/Eibach the Neuspeed Race is too low & too soft for the CRX for road racing...crx dosen't have the best front suspension travel and those springs kill all of your travel and allow the front end to bottom out.BUT if you want to go with a progressive spring kit and not coilovers unfortunately the Neuspeed Race and H&R race are the best out there.

Well, which would be better, progressive or linear?

for racing, linear. progressive gives a smoother ride on the street, but for racing, you'd want to go with the linear rate springs.

When I started doing IT races with the crx, it was had off-shelf Tokicos with 350 lbs front, 400 lbs rear eibach springs. Back then, the car was daily driven during the week and also a race car on the weekends. We would drive it to the track, replace the muffler&cat with a straight pipe, change the tires and go racing. It was OK on the track and OK for the street, but still too soft for the track and too stiff for the street. It was as good as you can do with a compromise. Two of the Tokicos were the "blue" thick (racing) model, which was discontinued some time ago. The other two were the normal Illuminas. Later we switched to 400f 600r springs and about two races later the two (normal) Illuminas were done and leaking.

Now we're running on 500 lbs front and 700 lbs rear eibachs with revalved konis since now the CRX has been a full time racecar for over a year.
