Gloves!
I will be doing both VIR events in Feb, and my question is pretty simple. Will it be cold enough for me to need gloves? And if so, do I need a set of dedicated gloves by a company like OMP, MOMO, etc? Or will a nice set of leather gloves (as long as theyre not too thick and grip nicely) do?
I like my batting gloves. I have some Franklin ones that were pretty cheap. No weird padding in the palm or fingers, stretch cloth backing. The best ones I had before were some cheap $8 Worth gloves that had a little tighter fit on the fingers. They might help keep your hands a little warmer than without gloves. I've used them in the winter to keep my fingers off the frigid wheel, and in the summer they're helpful in keeping a firm grip on the wheel when my palms get a bit sweaty. You might consider them as an inexpensive option.
just a thought, Ross, but if you plan on some day join in on the ECHC fun (I know I sure hope I can in the next couple of years) why don't you buy yourself a set of racing gloves? You'll need them to go racing anyway, and I don't think that they are that expensive (although I am sure you could find an expensive set if you looked...)
My participation in the ECHC will depend entirely on funds and whether or not my skills are up to it. If I can get a decent job that supports it, sure. I will need a beater car, something to tow my race car, and a place to keep all these vehicles - which begs the question of whether or not I will even be in the area when I am done with school. I don't see it being practical for me for a very long time.
FWIW, I wore my OMP Marathon gloves while rally-driving to work in the snow this morning and I can tell you that they aren't particularly warm at all. Granted, these are only the $69.95 lightweight, nomex/suede, non-padded ones, but... every other set of gloves I can think of is warmer. Although these gloves do great in warmer weather, I think a nice set of under-$30 thin leather gloves from a local department store might be a better choice for February events...
Just my opinion,
Jon

"Posi Grip" for track use. black
It will be cold... and the gloves help some.. but not like winter gloves... less material = better feel.... better ventilation = less hand funk.

Bah. just crank up the heat in the car, hehe...
Do they make you run with the windows open down there? Cuz here, we have to run with the windows closed. Horrible in the summer but nice on those October/November track days with the temp just above freezing...

Ross, a good set of gloves will do you good in the long run. If you'd ever come out to ALLSPORTS GP in Sterling, VA, you'd put them into good use as well as at VIR/Summit. I've tried the loaner gloves at ALLSPORT and have run with Mechanix gloves too; not enough pading. I then had Ceas's Sparco gloves that were nice, but just way too small. Let me know if your in the market for some Sparco gloves, I'm going to get a set.

Ross, get dedicated gloves, don't worry so much about brand names, rather fit and comfort. Personally, I'd go with bright colored gloves b/c they are so much more noticeable when giving signs.
Vic, how much are these gloves youre talkin about? Im not looking to spend much more than like 40 bucks? is that jackassery on my part? Hank, I'll go with yellow, it matches my ricey car.
Ross - who couldnt have gotten an ugly black ITR even if he wanted one

One option you might want to consider are military surplus leather gloves. I use them when I fly as well. Leather on the interior of the hand and cloth on the outside. They go up half your forearm... They grip really well and have excellent feel but there are warmer gloves.
About $15 from a surplus store... But they ARE camoflauge green... so the color would clash with MSY...

It looks like OMP has come out with a street driving type glove...
"Street driving glove, short gauntlet, polar wool, no padding, grey suede palm, velcro back. Available in red or blue, sizes SM-XL. $49.95"
