Default Formula One is changing again

http://www.fia.com/presse/f1-a/2003/...3-Measures.pdf

What's everybodys take on this?

I don't care for it. The team with the most money wins no matter what. Especially when you have Shumacher.

Hey AJ,

With a few exceptions I agree with the changes...
I'm not fond of:
1. the no spare car rule
2. the parke(sp?) ferme rule
3. any radio communication

I do agree that all the driver aids need to disappear ASAP, as you or I could have driven a 2002 spec Minardi without great difficulty... Because I know I am faster than Alex Yoong.

Mostly I agree with the changes because the series need soem sort of cap that will allow for better competiton.

I do think though that the no radio communication is not a good idea and may actually become an unsafe situation in regards to pitstops and mechanical failures.

Are we even sure that these rules are going to take effect next year? Or are they set in stone?

I am just wondering if the teams were warned ahead of time.

I agree and disagree.

I think that it would be cool to allow the spare car rule. That means teams could use this car to qualify and use the other car for the competition. Because of this, the spare car only needs to make one flying lap. So, this means an extremely light chassis, no engine cooling to keep weight down, extremely aerodynamic, etc.. This will raise costs. And because of the money issue, I am against it.

These cars should be self starting. I'm tired of seeing a car spin, stall, and be out of the race.

I also feel that these rules put limitations on new technology. Think about it. The technology learned out on the race cars end up in a production vehicle later in the future. Then again, maybe they don't.

The part that I LOVE !

No automatic transmissions, no traction control, no launch control!!! These are the best drivers in the world - let them DRIVE! Look to see Jacques doing better this year as a result. That, and the new 2003 BAR is pimpy cool!

I disagree; except for the Schumacher part. The most important ingredient in F1 success is skill, both of the driver and engineers. Sure they are bought with money but the most money doesn't always get teh best designers/drivers.

i wonder how you came to this conclusion

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Did you guys read this for 2004: -ensure that car manufacturers involved in F1 supply engines to all competing teams.

!! That means that Ferrari/BMW has to built 10-12 engines for each race?! How do they intend to prevent this series from having only BMW or Ferrari engines? I mean, obviously, Toyota and Maclaren would still run their own but don't you think that if Jordan could have run a BMW engine this year, they would have? Or does this mean the end of independent teams?

I assume they are going to have some sort of lottery system to prevent Ferrari from giving out lemons?

My interpretation is that all manufacturers must collectively supply all teams as works teams, in other words no purchasing of engines. Ferrari engine contracts killed Prost, and Jordan has to pay for their Cosworths, and other teams as well.

It purports that manufacturers get enough out of being in the championship and should not charge for engines. This rule will definitely have to be clarfied before 2004.

Pretty crazy stuff...

I think with all this stuff to slow the cars down they should bring back slicks

Also, with the 2-car rule, in the official release (http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns07603.html) they say that only two cars will be scrutineered except in "exceptional circumstances." To me this means that if your car is totalled in a crash during practice, you might be able to get a third car teched for the race. Who knows, but they definitely need to clarify a lot of these rules

Wait. Not only do they have to provide engines to all teams, they have to do IT FOR FREE??!?

boggles

I think they are going to. Increasing mechanical grip means less reliance on aerodynamics, which will make passing easier.

The REAL benefit to the *show* this year will be the new qualifying system, which could really mix up the grid since you only get one shot at setting a good time. I'm sure that if Schumi gets a bad qualifying lap, you will see a LOT of passing in that particular race!

If you read carefully - it says "no pit crew to driver (or vice versa) communication"

you could still have communication to the drivers regarding crashes etc from the track marshals
