ECHC Vs. others
Well, if nobody else is going to say it:
ECHC VIR Sunday results:
Best race lap: 01:44.754 (H2)
Best H1 lap: 01:46.208
Best H3 Lap: 01:47.784
Best H4 lap: 01:48.557
Best H5 lap: 01:52.640
Other Sunday results
Best SCCS lap: 1:36.958 (650 HP!)
Best AIX lap: 01:40.865 (302 Mustang)
Best PS0 lap: 01:42.144 (1999 'vette)
Best FFCobra lap: 01:43.048
Best AI lap: 01:43.878 (302 Mustang)
Best SU3 lap : 01:44.449 (Diasio sport racer)
Best PS1 lap: 01:45.553
Best Legends lap: 01:47.255
Best PS2 lap: 01:48.995 (RX-7)
Best 944 Cup lap: 01:49.461
Best Spec Miata lap: 01:52.851
I consider that damn good for a series with less than one year of development time, running very limited modifications (and very limited funds!). Not to mention putting on the closest racing you're likely to see.
Everybody else better watch out next year. The Hondas are coming!

The other thing we have to keep in mind is that the pond is small when we're talking about most of our NASA events. Most of the big boys are playing in the SCCA. Like it or not, that is where most of the skill, speed, and cubic dollars end up.
I do agree though that we're running very well for the first year on shoestring budgets

And some other times to compare:
Grand Am
ST1 BMW Z3 1:42.650
ST2 Integra LS 1:48.269
I couldn't find any SCCA times or records.

Little bit of correction, SCCS I think only have about 430hp.. But huge slicks make a big difference!
.
Best Spec Miata lap: 01:52.851

ECHC rocks...

edit : not "my" little Miata... no SM car has Hoosiers

IMO, a well prepped H2 car should be running as fast as ITS. We're still a ways off from fast ITS times.
I will qualify that by saying that ITS guys around here are REALLY fast. Bimmerworld is just around the corner, and they put out some serious trick ITS cars.

Best H3 was 01:47.393 but close enough.
The fact that there is that much gap between H2 and H3 shows that we H3 racers have some work to do. I plan on being a lot quicker by next season and I know that Scott and Karl will be.

I'm not 100% sure about all the other races, but from what I remember the difference was a lot smaller between the H2 and H3 times. I think the case here was just of driving the wheels off the car more than usual by the description of this wild H2 race. This is usually what such close racing does to people.
Another proof of this phenomenon at work is comparing how many people actually go quicker during the race than they do in qualifying. It's usually quite a lot of folks. It's quite hard to get in the right mindset to drive just as "wild" by yourself in a qualifying session as you can in a race when pushed by the others around you. Lots of "pushing" as in the case of this last H2 race by the sound of things.
who ran the ps1 time of 1:45???, i was in ps1 and didn't see that time (although i didn't see the times for sunday) and would be curious to see who ran that quick.
i find the 944 cup lap times intersting, the winner is a ITS 944 car w/ a very very quick driver (has won MARRS srx7 races which is hard to do), although i think he is carrying more weight in 944 cup than in scca its, but is intersting to compare to h3 times

Roughly...
H3 = ITS
H2 = Cars orphaned by SCCA (or saddled with inappropriate weights)
I too am surprised to see the 1:45 PS-1 time. I thought they were in the 47-48 range?

Technically ITS is H2 and H3. ITS rules allow a few more modifications than our rules do so some ITS cars would bump up to H2.
I feel that H3 compares fairly well with SCCA right now. Fast H3 times are typically falling somewhere between fast ITA and ITS times, which is about right. Keep in mind that many of the best ITS cars in this part of the world have 30 to 40 grand invested in them. This is about twice as much as what is in most of the Honda Challenge H2 and H3 cars.
I don't like the "us vs. them" stuff either, especially when it's not apples to apples. But it's good to benchmark yourself to see how you are doing.
All in all, Honda Challenge is turning very respectable lap times.

In theory, H2 should be faster than the 944 Cup cars. But getting into details and using the numbers for anything more than smack talk and fun is pretty pointless.
I'm not going to step into the comparing "us vs them" discussion. I just don't think it's a healthy idea.
I'm literally in a hyper-malaise over the end of the season. I enjoyed driving this last weekend perhaps more than is healthy for a normal human. I'm in what seems like a painful withdrawl.
I called Scott Zellner (for all intents my Psychiatrist) just to tell him how much fun I had and to thank him. He kind of chuckled uneasily and said "I don't know what I did". In the most direct sense I don't know what he did either, but he's one of the few people qualified to take a call from a person in this state. It's to his credit that he didn't try to sell me anything in my highly unstable condition (he did mention the Mugen LSD with the steep ramps though - but I was gonna get that anyway).
We (ECHC, WCH-T, etc) HAVE to put together something for all of us in 2003. If it isn't Mid-Ohio with NASA/ECHC, then let's try to make it Road America for something else - equalize out the drive for a once per year be-there.
I know that we all put together the max schedule we can afford, and that that leaves little room for anything else. But we can all agree that this would be an important date on the calendar - wouldn't it?
Scott, who's looking at 2003 and not seeing how it can all work.....he'll worry about that tomorrow.....and the next day.......I'm just day to day at this point.....
The possibility of a Honda Challenge race weekend at Mid Ohio is currently a very good one. Leave early April open on your calendars.
That's all I can confidently say at this point.
