Default Coach Needs Help!

Hey,

I signed up to help Newbies at their first autocross in the SFR region...along with Geritol.....

Anyrate, I drive a MR (Boxster) and my Student drives a FF (RSX 03'). I was wondering what I can expect in terms of lift-throttle oversteer, tire pressures, and shifting points, Horsepower. Does the RSX plow, or can lift throttle get the car to rotate predictably. Is it similar to an Integra GSR ? I would gather the student has stock tires....so what kinda upgrades, and who makes them, would you recommend, to keep it in the stock class (In case he asks) ? (Tires, Shocks......)

I thought I would mention the Honda-Tech board to him, but if any of you RSX, SFR SCCA members would like to help him along I'll pass on your name, even do a meet and greet.

If you have any other suggestions, I am all eyes...

Thanks

BoxsterPaul.

P.S. Geritol...sorry to hear about your car...check out the RIG for good anti-theft...

lift-throttle oversteer
Not much unless you're really throwing the car around hard.

tire pressures
On street tires, high in front (38-42psi) and higher in rear (40-44psi) to start. Lower if you can without rolling over.

and shifting points
RXS-S should be fine in 2nd gear through most courses. It has a fairly high redline.

Horsepower
Between GSR and ITR. Should feel fairly torquey (for a small 4 cylinder).

Does the RSX plow, or can lift throttle get the car to rotate predictably.
Yes, and probably not (unless you know how to set it up). Driven nice a smooth/slow, it should be ok.

so what kinda upgrades, and who makes them, would you recommend, to keep it in the stock class (In case he asks) ? (Tires, Shocks......)
For stock class... nothing at all except tires for now. Maybe shocks down the road. The RSX is a great car - I was very impressed with one at VIR (stock, w/ Azenis and brake pads).

I have an Integra with upgraded rear sway bar, springs, shocks

I drove a stock suspension RSX-S once at autoX

I thought they would drive similar since they are both FF drivetrain.

boy was I wrong...the RSX chassis is mush stiffer...understeer is much less noticable

The RSX can definately lift-throttle oversteer. The pressures I actually played around with and in conjunction with other rsx autoxers, was 38 front, 36 rear for stock size falken azenis (205/55/16)

The car does push, but only if you romp on the pedal...since it does have a fairly good amount of HP and you'll be riding 2nd gear all the time except for those "park it" hairpins. the lift-throttle oversteer happens coming hot from a straight to a 90 degree or a long medium sweeper... I've spun my car out twice and had the car oversteer in slaloms coming to hot and lifting the throttle to slow down.

But this car doesn't understeer too much... it will surprise you when the rear comes out though, and yes, it needs to be driven smooth and patiently.....

Hi Paul,

Compared to my car it will push more. The best comparison I can give is that the difference in lift throttle oversteer between your car and mine will be about the same between mine and a stock RSX.

However, being a new driver if the tail just wiggles I'm sure it will feel like the car is sideways to him. "Did you see me get the car all sideways?" "nope, now go get a ride in that brown Capri".

The biggest upgrade he could do for his car would be some good tires. I'm assuming he will be going into STS with all the other RSXs so I think a set of good lightweight rims and Falkens. Also, a bigger rear sway bar should help after he gets used to the car. I would go with Comptech's super trick 2-way adjustable rear sway bar.

See you at the school on Thursday.
