Seeing how they are DOT legal, I'd honestly see nothing wrong with using them on the street either, in addition to auto-x use. They couldn't possibly be less safe than the stock seatbelts that came in my 90 Integra, those stupid powered ones that are supposed to move when the door closes but never do correctly.

they are worse with no roll cage
because if you flip it you are held up right and cant move if the roof collapses
also if you dont mount the shoulder belts at the correct angle you can have spinal compression in an accident
stick with the stock belts for the street

Rockdude answered some of the problems, with the last being that the 4-point allows for submarining (sliding under the lapbelt into the footwell), whereas the stock 3-point allows your body to fold over the lapbelt, preventing that.

is submarining really that big of a problem with car seats
i can understand with formula vee or others with more of a reclined position
i actually have a 5pt (sometimes use the sub belt)
but the only reason i do is it keeps the lap belt from riding up when tightening the shoulder belts

I don't know for sure (meaning I haven't seen documented cases or read experimental test reports), but every 4-point I've ever used rides up, which seems to me like that would increase the chance of it happening. The idea of getting most of my body compressed into that space is scary enough that I'm not ever going to take the chance just so my one lonely shoulder can feel more supported.
