Why not just go for a 3sgte with a 2nd gen?

1) The "cool" factor.
2) I'm a honda guy at heart
3) The K series is a better motor.

i have an mr2. i sold my honda's an bought a fast car..ha sorry i still love honda's but my mr2 is real bad. i just purchased a 2.2 stroked motor an a custom turbo setup. shoulda be running within the next 2 months. by the time you put a k series into an mr2 to make a whopping 200an whatever hp an no torque at the wheels you could build the stock 3s motor an make 400+ if you so desired. just my opinion,

ya but the 3sgte has reliability issues and the k series makes way more torque turbo'd in the 400hp range than the 3sgte.

besides, its is extremely hard to build a reliable 500hp 3sgte.

what you want info on. im sure i could provide you with some. i dont even have my car back yet. i spun a bearing on the old 165k mile motor that made 291 at 15lbs. all on stock everything except for a 20g kit. so hopefully soon it will be on road with new setup. everything is one off. its extremly hard to build any car that is 500hp.it takes a lot of loot no matter what youre building even if you do all the labor yourself.

I realize that. I've owned two 500+whp cars already though, and I know it's no easy feat to accomplish and won't be cheap getting there. But hey. if this hobby was cheap everyone and their mother would have a sick ride.

Every car I've owned that made serious power (a Turbo-GSR powered CRX and a 99 GSX Eclipse) either had the motor in it to be rebuilt or had mount kits available for a more efficient power plant.

If I end up swapping a k20 or a k24 into this MR2 its gonna be completely custom fabricated, obviously.

I just really don't know where to start.

Placing the engine in the right location would seem to be a pretty serious decision and I have no clue where to start. Everything else should be pretty straight forward, from wiring to axles to custom exhaust.

Everyone is telling me to swap a 1mzfe or just build the 3sgte.

I'm not for it.

A turbo 3sgte makes what, 170whp max. A k20 is gonna put out 200whp with a header, intake, exhaust and a "swap-necessary" k-pro. 350whp is easily attainable on a basic turbo setup.

Now a built k24 bottom end, type s head, and a gt35r setup is gonna put some serious numbers down AND maintain a decent level of reliability.

honestly if you are looking for reliability, and a more "bolt on" engine swap solution. i suggest swapping in the camry/solara V6. its a popular swap on MR2s as opposed to a 3SGTE. and if you want even more power, you can slap on the TRD Supercharger for good measure. plenty of torque, usable powerband. i remember turbo mag did some engine work and turbo and supercharged the engine.

the 2gr-fe? i actually was looking into the swap, the only reason i was thinkign about the k series is i already have the k series swap. i was going to put it into my civic but i totaled it before i got the chance :/

might just sell the k and go with the 2gr-fe.

sell that, then buy an fd and ls1 swap that

well the 2GR is a much newer engine series. the 1MZ is what i was referring to. not sure if the 2GR would require more engine bay finessing.

great info....
even though I am a honda guy, if I ever got a 2 seater toy it for sure would be the mr2 or sk2.

I love the look of the 2000-2005 MR2

Q?
what practical swaps are out there?

don't waste your time with a k20 in the mk2 body style. it's either you do a 5sgte build or go v6 turbo.

if you want to go k20, it's just easier to go with the mk3 chassis. i would love to have an mr-s with a k20 turbo. that would be the ultimate street/strip/auto-x/circuit machine.
