EF SiR retrofits??
Hi all,
I currently have 8000k H4H cheap bulbs running off of my hella 35w gen3 ballasts and wanting better light output and unscattered beam pattern. I am thinking of buying a spare set of EF9 headlight housings and doing a FX35 bixenon projector swap.
The only pic I have seen of it being done is on Randy Gagan's car. (pic here for those who dont know him allthough I am sure the majority knows who he was)
Since Randy is not here with us anymore, is there anyone else that could share some info if you have done the retrofit? (did you polish out the halogen ribs to acheve a better cutoff, or how well does it work without modifying the headlight lens at all, ect)
All info is greatly appriciated
TIA Rob

You should contact 'donut'. He was good friends with Randy, and did the same surgery to EG headlamps, maybe he could help you out. I always admired the BMW retro-fit.

cool, I will try to contact him, thanks for the help!
from that pic above it just looks like the retroed the lights and left the lense alone. I would love to see a beam patern pic on a wall with a setup like that!
I like the look of it that way (kinda makes the projectors hidden) but I wonder of it defeats the purpose of doing the retrofit....

A quick shot of my ricey 8000k's. I avoid driving at night so I dont glare the crap out of anyone. Oddly enough, I have never been highbeamed or pulled over (knock on wood)
Glad I could help! Your car looks pretty nice from the pic man. I'm just using Polarg H4H bulbs on my headlights. I have a spare set of 90-91 JDM lights. If I ever come across a really nice set of projectors, I might give it a shot.

^Did that set last year. Have since purchased some e46 shrouds/bezels with the word "Xenon" on them. Haven't had time to put them in yet, but with some slight trimming they should fit nicely and probably be the last thing I'll do to the headlamps.
Btw, the cutoff is definitely better than a kit, but the flutes kill the color effect at the cutoff. I may or may not sand down and polish out a circular area in front of the projector lens. Too much other stuff right now to worry about the car though.

But for reference (this took me hours of searching to find out)...
The easiest way to sand down the flutes without destroying the plastic lenses is to use a makita rotary tool with a roloc or whatever surface finishing disk. Start with mid-low grit and keep reducing the grits while keeping everything cool/lubricated (i.e. have a swimming pool of water in the lens and keep changing the water out to keep it fresh). Once you get it down to around 1000-2000 grit, it should hand or machine polish nicely.
Using this method, you can easily have a nicely sanded down circular portion directly in front of the projector for that OEM look
. I wish I still had pictures of some people that used that method, but the results are great. Looks exactly OEM and you don't get that "lens effect" from hand sanding where the thickness of material is greater than in others.
Wouldn't it be easiest to simply buy a set of "ricer" headlamps with a clear lens and junk projectors, and retrofit those instead of the OEM lamps? Especially the ones that come with a separate high beam reflector?
I've done several retrofits for several different types of cars. If you'd like to check out a few pics, you can look at my myspace page myspace.com/bceretrofits If you're interested, just let me know
Nice job on those retros! I think I am going to attempt this myself, its an excuse for me to get away from the house and into the shop, LOL. Thanks for the offer though!

Wow, Just what I was looking for! Thanks for that and nice job!
NP, and good luck with the retrofit. It was definitely a good learning experience. Just be careful when baking the headlights...I would actually recommend that you use a heatgun and go slowly at it.
Also, try to mount the projector as far back as you can, and if you decide to use a shroud make sure everything fits before you start drilling holes in the reflector. If I could do it again I'd probably mount the projectors back about 1/8-1/4".

Also, dont forget about the zc headlights. They are one bulb figment too, I think just like the H4 ones. But they can be used to retro fit with ricer light lense on zc base headlights.
