Default Questions about ls vtec.

Ok, first and foremost I have a complete ls bottom end I'm building. Also have a b16a head I'm building. Now on to the questions. In my car now is another complete ls swap, sitting in our shop is another completely stock b16a head. So I have two complete engines and two complete vtec heads. I'm not concerning building an engine. Just making that clear. So, the ls in my car has 105k and currently has crower stage 2 na cams on a mapped p75. I'm considering putting the spare head on my car and swapping to a p28 either stock with an apexi neo or chipped. Keeping the redline stock or at exactly 7k, with stock bottom end and stock head. JUst wondering the pros and cons to doing this and will it impede reliability of the stock bottom end? Also may a few guesses as to if I will see any gains or losses compared to the cammed setup I have now. Thanks in advance.

Your stock ls bottom end will be fine either way. Ive seen bone stock ls bottom ends handle 500plus hp on boost

So im pretty sure on an semi-stock all motor setup you will be fine
And if you go with the stock head/block combo there will be a definite power loss than the cammed setup

Thanks for Not telling me to build my bottom end and spun it to 9k, as that is what the uninstalled engine and one of the heads is for.that motor is gonna be fully built but in the meantime I am pondering doing a stock lsv. The reason so is that I've lost low end torque with the crowers and a little driveability. In looking at pistona for my other engine every place i have read says one comp ratio for ls head and .5 or so more with a vtec head, without specifying if its b16 or gsr that they are talking about. I just assumed from that that changing the head would up the cr a tad and maybe that combined with the flow improvement I would see a small gain over my current setup not to mention the driveability improvement from vtec. Just looking for second opinions before I waste a gasket, sandwich plate and timing belt.

i would personaly keep the setup you have on your car. yes the vtec head will give you more top end but if you going to be limited to the 7k redline your not going to get much out of it. example: lets say your vtec is engage at 5k. that only leaves you with 2k of vtec.

your stage 2 cams must have a higher lift and duration compare to the stock primary lobrs of the vtec cams. This give you an advantage from 1k up to 5k compared to the vtec cams. of course after 5k you vtec lobes will engage and probably will be better than your stage 2 cams, but like i daid it will only be for so little rpm.

Yeah, but having the stage two cams is great at lofty rpm, however the mid and low rpm suffered as a result, which is t be expected. I have had it tuned with cams set at different lsa to shift the powerband from low to mid to high rpm and love how they feel set in each way, but hate being out of that rpm range. I dislike the driveability. Maybe they are just too aggressive for me to drive every day.

Yes i agree.most likely your cams are too aggresive for daily driven. But im sure it is a fun motor once you push that gas pedal to the floor. If your looking for reliability and comfort then it will be better to swtich to a vtec head. Just keep in mind that you will have to push the rev limiter to 8k. Thats if you want to get more top end power.

I think I'll just leave it and revert back to the stock cams or possibly Stage 1 Crowers. I just miss driving around in 5th gear @ 30MPH around town enjoying the velvety smooth torque and fuel mileage. BTW the car is a 90 CRX HF so you can see where I'm coming from.
