Question on A B16 engine
I'm new in this forum, and I have read and learned A bunch of information from other members questions, it's been real helpful. I own a 1993 civic cx hatchback. My father and I are going to be ordering my B16a Dohc Vtec, now the thing is jdm or usdm? What is a easier engine to service and maintain?, or even mod? Any info would be Helpful. Thanks
If you can get a USDM del sol Si dohc vtec it would be alittle easier, but still a couple of wires will need to be added. I have also seen a jdm b16a in that body style and the guy that did the swap said he had very little problems on the install. It is also the fact of do you want a hydro tranny ( if your car has the hydro ablity ) or if you would like it to be a cable. It really is all in what you want. I also think that the mounts have to be specific in the jdm swap as to the USDM uses other USDM mounts. Just some food for thought, good luck. I did this swap into a 91 Si and it took 22 hours and alot of trips to honda and D.A.P.
US or JDM they will drop in like candy .both are nearly identical.the jdm motor will not pass emissons depending on which county and state you are in... ( adding a cat will help) you have a 93 civic best stick with a hydraulic tranny it will be easier than going from hydro to cable.. good luck
hahah I am in the same boat.. 92 CX with a swap in the plans for this winter.
seems like JDM motors have two issues...
1) have to wire up a harness to the other side of the motor.. just mirror image them to a new connector, not tough, just time consuming.
2) you have no way to know how many miles that motor has seen.. and its not the fault of the importer either, its just not trace-able easlily and trustworthy (this is in comparison to USDM motors from a trusted source with paperwork and receipts of course!)
but you may get bonus parts on a JDm setup.. LSD tranny, better pistons = high compression.
I am leaning towards a USDM 99-00 civic si B16 just to get a newer motor that has fewer miles, and I want to keep it failry stock for a year until I get better at roadracing / SOLO I.

I got a JDM motor from JSPEC (b16a), and when we broke it down, it was FRESH.I mean the motor build date was 1991, and when we broke it down in May of this year, that mug was CHOICE!!!
BTW, it is strong enough with valve train upgrade and Portflow head to last nite take my 1991 Civic EX 4 door to a 14.02 @ 97.4 mph at Capitol. Only prob that I have had is that the synchronizers are a little bit weak but holding up to 8000 rpm launches and shifts (2-3) @ 9200, so the internals are pretty good - I did switch over to CTR pistons too. Prob a lot more in the combo, but I have been very happy.
