If you look at the plastic cover on your lower timing belt cover, you will see a line.
Since you have such an old motor, the color used to dipict the middle 15 degrees of advance has probably faded.
its important to make sure your car is at PROPER idle IE 750-800ish.
If your car cant idle for crap, you cant adjust your timing, bust out the helms and correctly set your idle.
After that, make sure you have the timing light hooked up to the #1 sparkplug wire, after that shine it down following the line that is on the lower timing belt cover, make sure that your line of sight follows that line on the timing belt lower cover, this will give you more accurate results. Now, look with the timing light flashing, where the line is, you will see 3 marks in the crank pulley. The one that is the factory setting is the one in the middle. Now, loosen the bolts on your distributor if the middle dash on the crank pulley does not match up with the plastic line on the timing belt cover. Adjust the distributor by advancing or retarding it till the lines match up.

first you need to clean the timing marks on the pulley and paint the marks that way when you use the timing gun it will show up. that's pretty common sense though(no flaming intended) also I highly recomend the helms manual that is the "holy bible" for all serious tuners.
I'm just beening **** about it. they guy seems to been a rookie with the way he says it. but yeah you don't really need to paint it but it does help the first timers. also it's harder to see the marks if you have a older engine because the factory paint marks do wear down.
