Hoistless engine swap?
I need to do a swap this weekend and i can't seem to source a hoist. I can't afford to buy one right now either. I've read several posts about this, but i wanted to get more opinions of it. Is it safe on the motor? Will a standard floor jack suffice to lift the car up and over? Any info would be greatly appreciated and pics would be even better.
TIA,
Adam

Also, if anyone in the DFW area has a hoist to lend i could definitley throw some cash their way, or, if you're interested, i have a bunch of parts laying around that i would trade for use of the hoist. I have: a brand new set of JUN eyebrows (unpainted) for 96-98 civics, a set of slightly used Skunk2 coilovers that will fit 92-00 civics, brand new WingsWest sideskirts for 96-00 civics (unpainted), a bunch of OEM ej/ek stuff, an Audio Control 6XS linedriver w/ sep sub volume, 1 JL 10" w0 in a little POS box, an older Clarion Headunit (i don't have the model # right now, but i can get it), and probably a bunch more stuff that i've forgotten. Thanks for lookin'...don't forget to bump if it's buried.

yea you can do it. im doing it right now with a crx. it does take a decent amount of patience tho. you can raise the car enough to clear the engine with a normal floor jack. you might want to place the jack under the front crossmember and bring the front of the car up that way. you can place blocks of wood or whatever under both sides of the car. just keep adding blocks. you'll prolly have to put a block under the jack itself to get the car up that high. you might want to put a piece of plywood underneath the car so you can slide the engine under the car easier. then you just bring the car down slowly, making sure everything clears. this is the second time i've done a swap w/o a hoist. both times, i put the front of the car entirely down on the ground. the crx has no front hubs on it so with the front of the car on the ground, you can bolt the engine in.
have fun man.
it takes patience to do it this way, but it works.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I think i may just wait until i can find a hoist. This is my first swap and i think it's probably a better idea to do it "by the book" on this one.
Been there, done that. If you don't have a hoist or cherry-picker, you can just jack the chassis up really high (might still need to remove the front bumper), and slide the motor in & out from underneath. Then drop the chassis down to the ground and maneuver the rear mount into place and get that started. Then jack it up and do the sides and you're set.

Just like Newman said. 90% of the swaps that I have done have been without a hoist, I can only think of 2 which were the first 2 I ever did where I used a hoist. I've done countless B and D series, an H22 EG, you name it. Sometimes it's easier to do the tranny and engine separate if you don't have people helping you.

Thanks again everybody. It sounds like I'm not the only one who doesn't feel like dropping $150-300 on a hoist for a -seemingly- one time deal. I'll keep the "lift/shove-shove/drop" option in mind, but i think, at least for this first swap (hopefully not the last)...i'll stick with the hoist method.
