Default B20VTEC or B16a?

Hey guys, I have a '92 DX hatch and was wondering if you guys could help me out a bit.

Anyway I'm thinking of doing an engine swap sometime soon and I want the best bang for the buck kind of thing. I don't want to spend to much but I still want a relativily powerful engine to move my little hatch along.

Ok first off I was looking at the B16a b/c of its great top end, good price and its relativily easy to swap in. I was also think of going the B20VTEC route. I'm not sure if I will ever actually build it up, maybe in the future but for now I plan on running a stock B16a head and a stock B20 bottom end. Opinions on this set up? Will this cost me more than a B16a if I'm just basicly bolting it right up and how does it compare? I know you won't be able to rev as high as a B16a and there is some fabricating involved to fit the head on there. In the end is it worth it or should I just go B16a and not bother. Of course the extra torque will be a big plus, thats mostly the reason I was looking into it. I would actually love to feel my car pull hard for once.

What tranny you recommend with the B20VTEC, I suppose the stock B20 tranny isn't that great huh (long gears like the DX I'm assuming)? Also I should look for a B20Z over the B20B right b/c of the extra 20HP, or are they priced quite differently?

And btw I will be doing the swap on my own of course .

Oh and I did use the search and found some usefull info but nothing regarding this question exactly. I usually don't post b/c I usually get my answers by reading other's post. But in this case I would really like to hear from some of you.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I am researching b20 VTEC also. im gonan buy a b16a2 compete swap from hmo.com and buy a CRV engine and use the bottom end. they say that the b16 w/ LSD tranny is the best. check out http://b20vtec.com and http://importreviews.com

i would just go with a b16 for now if you plan on doing it yourself.. a well built b20 will cost you a decent amount of money... a stock b20 block w/ stock b16 head... i wouldn't do it.. swap the b16 in.. buy a b20 bare block / crank and build it up as you get $$ then swap the blocks over a weekend

Between these two motors, I would agree with the above post.

-or-

You could just get a b16 now and add a turbo kit as funds come in. That will smote a NA b20vtec.

-or-

You could add a direct port NX kit to a b16 and that would be pretty nice.

Thanks for the reponses guys.

What if I say I can get a B20 for cheap, should I still not bother with it or what?

I know where I can get one for signifianlly cheaper than a B16a and its in great shape. I was thinking maybe just throw in the B20b stock for now, (I mean its a lot stronger than my D16Y7) and build it up later.

Would this be a good idea or no?

Plus I'm itching to do another swap(did a B16a swap awhile back in my buddies car), I love doing this kinda stuff.

If you plan on going with the stock b20b/z block you will need to shave the valve reliefs on the pistons because they are not deep enough for the b16a head. but my ultimate plan is a sleeved b20vtec turbo'ed at 18psi daily driver!

Just buy the B20 and leave it stock excpet for the usual replacements during a swap (timing belt, clutch)..

Then start to save for turbo.. Once you've gone that far--- building a B20 block down the road will be no big deal.. But a stock B20 with a properly sized turbo should run you into the 12s with slicks and a lil tuning in a hatch..
